    SKS Yugo

Took the new Yugo to the Range yesterday and shot 4" group at 50 yards with iron sights. Was thinking of putting a scope on what is best mount to install? I seen some online under 30.00 and some combos with scope and mount for under 50.00, what are the boards thoughts on these Items?

They are all junk, with the exception of the ScoutScope -type mounts.
Any system that incorporates the dust cover or gas tube as a mounting surface will never hold zero.

You need to practice more before you start throwing parts on it.

There are some scope mounts that fit to a new dust cover with set screws that fit to the receiver. They hold zero until you take the dc off to clean the rifle.

i wouldn't mess with dust cover mounts tbh.

i got one for next to nothing off a guy at a gun show to try it, yes if i made it wedge in by putting cardboard between front "forks" of the cover mount that go under the receivers rails it sort of held zero for a little bit at least.

i've sense got a molot POSP rail from kalinka, drilled and tapped my receiver for it (was easy to do actually) and got an AK POSP scope off a fellow calgunner for a good price. these mounts do not require you use a POSP btw. Kalkina sells various weaver type mounts that work with the standard side rail. the molot rail is also universal and will work with both AK and SVD style clamps

just to show you targets at 50 yards i shot with each scope

this is with the cover mount and a 4x24 Simmons scope (i could not use stripper clips with this btw and shells hit my scope a little bit but it was cheap so i did not care)

        with the AK POSP

note on this target the 7 shots not grouped together i was trying out some commercial brass ammo out, as i never tried brass/boxer ammo in my yugo before and did not want any slam fire incidents i shut off the gas system when i was shooting them and idk if it was the ammo or me shutting of the gas but they were going all over the place and this was after i had it sighted in with my normal wolf black box ammo in semi-auto mode. so i switched back to wolf and the 10~ shots grouped together were consecutive shots.

the only way to get the accuracy better imo is practice on my part and a good trigger job.

oh with the AK scope its offset to the left just far enough with this mount that you can still use stripper clips just barely but they work

the SVD mounts are lower and a tad more the the right so i doubt they will clear strippers and same goes with the weaver mounts for these rails.

here is my yugo with the POSP mounted.

here is the mount without the scope on it. (this photo i have the rifle in its original stock still)

other good options for scope mounts are choate drill & tap mounts and scout scope mounts that require a long eye relief scope and replace the iron sights. with the POSP mount setups and the choate mounts you retain the usability of your iron sights.

Don't scope it iron sights are best, besides you can only group up to 100 yards then round drop at a high rate.

            This.
I nail the 380 yd steel at SLOSA at will. The wife is even better with her 59/66.

Been there done that with scopes on SKS's... don't.

idk i was just as bad as the OP with iron's at 100 yards i was lucky to keep it on paper tbh.

my issue personally isn't iron sights per se its that the iron sights on my 59/66 are so crappy i have a hard time keeping the post centered in the notch. i shoot better with my 91/30's irons mainly because the rear sight leaf is a V notch rather than a straight notch. the play is much less on them. i'm certain with better open sights like aperture sights i could do better but at the end of the day a 4x scope of decent make is going to make consistently shooting at a target easier imo and that is why i scoped my 59/66.

the other bonus i have with the AK scope is that i have a 7.62x39 calibrated reticule with BDC chevrons at 200 and 300 meters. i haven't tried them but you can tell just by looking at them that bullet drop on 7.62x39 is quite large as the 300m chevron is much lower than the 200m one. that however doesn't mean it can't do it if you know how the bullets from what i read are still supersonic until they get past 300+ meters

If you're determined to scope it.. .get one of these:

(4th one down). Mounts to the receiver. I have one on one of my SKS's.. no problem holding zero.

I have one of these on my other SKS: http://www.tech-sights.com/

                  thats a receiver cover mount.

i don't think anyone mentioned that another major problem with those are that you must remove them to clean the rifle. when you take into consideration the floating firing pin design of most SKS's cleaning after each use of the bolt at the very least to insure the pin is free floating still and FP channel is clear of debris from ammo having to take a cover mounted scope off and losing zero every time on top of the pain that the clamp down cover mounts are means to myself and many other SKS owners that even if you get lucky and have one that hold zero when mounted its still way more work in the long run than drilling and tapping a POSP or Choate mount to the side of the receiver.

the POSP mount is one of very few types you can find that allow you to remove the scope if you want for any reason and never loose zero. the Choate mount's are not removable without tools but if they are mounted correctly you can manage to get the action dismantled without removing them.

i would recommend checking out various threads over on http://www.sksboards.com ask peoples opinions of cover mounts if you want. the vast majority will tell you what i'm saying, cover mounts are not the way to go ever.

to the OP if you want a used cover mount with a simmons scope PM me. ill sell it to you for like 20 bucks shipped. its worthless IMO and i have little use for the scope as well.

If he is shooting almost 8 MOA with the rifle then pretty much any scope mounting system will work. He could probably just use duct tape to hold the scope on there and still get close to 8 MOA.

you need more practice. imo sks's are more accurate than an ak.

goodluck with the scopes and mounts i dunno where you can get some

grant boys will get you any scope you want they will order it if you just ask.

oh i totally forgot to ask. where did you get it at?

if its a 59/66 from Big 5 (mine is) i found out early on that the muzzle brake CAI tack welded on to the bbl was really adversely effecting the performance of my Yugo at the range once it heated up and that don't take long.
