    That old gun smell

Not to be confused with that new car smell, or the smell the victory. What is it? Is it the cosmo? I just got my M38 today in the mail, and it has that smell. Now it's not covered in cosmoline, probably has some in the stock under the receiver, but I don't know yet. Seems that every old gun I have smell the same.Even the ones that aren't milsurps.

    That musty military surplus smell!

If they made an aftershave with that scent, I'd buy it by the case!

Second only to smell of burning gunpowder!

There is something magical and intoxicating about it. It's kinda like the un-restored vintage chevy smell.

That curly piece of waxed paper that comes out of the barrel of an old Romy parts kit has a wonderful smell also. I imagine it's the same smell that you guys are talking about.

Moldy wood? I hate that smell. I've restocked my Garand and 1903. My other stuff I clean the stock in the dish washer or use Easy off to give it a good deep cleaning. Then I use Tung oil to seal the stock. After I clean and lube the metal it smells new!

I love the smell of Hoppe's in the morning.
