Mosin Range Report

Well, after a long vacation, I got back home and took the first opportunity to get my Mosin to the range. It is a 1925 ex-Dragoon. I didn't have great expectations for accuracy as the person I bought it from said it shoots high. So I was expecting some sighting issues. It turns out there were none.
We showed up at the P2K Range and since I had never shot the rifle before, I had to get it on the paper on the 25 yd range first. Having "it shoots high" in my head the first five shots were aimed low and they didn't even hit the paper. I couldn't tell where they were going. For kicks I just aimed center and bang, there it was.
Next was on to the 50 yd range with my son and my friend Mike with his AR-15. We had a good time and P2K is a great place to shoot. My shoulder is a little sore (as is to be expected). I really like the Mosin Nagant. It is fun and cheap to shoot and while not a tack driver, it is pretty accurate (see targets below). The target on the right is five shots from the MN followed by five from the AR. I may have been pulling a little with the AR as I think it should have grouped better than that. My shoulder had taken a beating by that point.

i took mine out to the range yesterday after re-crowning it and its about 2x as accurate as before, my last group i shot at 50 yards looks about the same as yours in the photo's so yours probably has a good muzzle, mine was worn when i got it so i had to cut off 1/2" of barrel and recrown it.

as for the shooting high thing most 91/30's do shoot high because they were sighted in with the bayonets attached and that changes the bbl harmonics a bit. if you shoot at 100 yards you might find that it does shoot a tad high and possibly to the right as well

I need to do a 25 yd sight in on mine. I took it directly to 100yds and while there were some on the paper it needs to be dialed in. Thirty rounds later the bruise on my shoulder is just starting to fade two weeks later.

ouch, sounds like you got a good bruise.

when i first got my mosin i did the same thing and it took me months for my shoulder to fully recover from the damage the steel plate did to me, even when i thought it was healed up if i went out and shot the mosin again it would bruise again very quickly.

yesterday i shot about 60~ rounds through my SKS then 15 through the mosin. around shot 10 i think i started to feel the bruise coming on so i quit while i was ahead hehe

one thing that does work if you modify it is that cheap thick rubber butt plate you can buy for the mosins. they are too stiff the way they come but if you drill out all the holes in them so they get more pliable it starts to work

Regardless of the recoil, they're the most fun milsurps out there, IMO. And cost effective too.



P2K is indoor, right? What's the report of the x54R in there?

Yeah, I'm not much of a surface bruiser, so it will never look like a bruise, but it is sore.

It is pretty loud, but it is a big room. There are 2x50yd ranges and I think 6 or 8x100yd ranges and they have some baffles on the ceiling so that all helps with the Db levels. There were at most 4 lanes being used at any given time and that was mid-day Saturday, so I was pretty happy. Also the ventilation is adequate so you aren't choking on smoke after 20 minutes. I will definitely be going back.
