    Got my K31!!!

****Updated with pics in post #12.****

    I know, I know...

I will get some pics up ASAP, I swears! It's a 1940 K31 with a beautiful walnut stock. Came with the original sling and cleaning kit (with some 70 year-old grease!!!).

The only thing I used to clean up the stock was a light orange oil. The butt plate has a bit of oxidation/rust, however, and I was wondering what the best method would be for cleaning it up. Is it okay if I use some double zero steel wool on it? Is there another method that would be better? Please, oh C&R gurus, enlighten me!

I have heard that Kroil removes the rust, however, I am no expert.

Navel jelly works just be careful with it it strips the finish from everything including the bluing from gun. You could just use wd-40 and wipe the hell out of it thats what i usally do. there is also a rust remover they sell at harbor freight that works good. But be careful it`s kinda like navel jelly just not as powerful. Good luck
And yes we need pics that is how we keep going in life.

Navel jelly will also pit the metal. I'd avoid it on firearms. I use fine steel wool and oil on unblued metal. Bronze wool will cut the rust off blued metal without damaging the finish.

Waffenfett is the 70 year old grease. That grease is designed to be used to seal the walnut stock, used to provide a grease/oil coating for the metal parts, and the bore cleaner/grease. Really good stuff!

If the walnut stock is dry, you may want to use raw linseed oil cut with turpentine.

0000 steel wool with WD40 or gun oil is good to take that buttplate rust. If you don't have Kroil, get it, it's an excellent bore cleaner for carbon.

                Post pics please!

I use WD-40 for removing grease and rust but never use it as a lubricant! It gets sticky after awhile and looks like syrup and sticks like it too. (yes found out the hard way)

Rub the rust area with the edge of a nickel. It will take the rust off and not mar the finish. Follow up with some light weight oil. This works on blued finishes just fine. Any guage of steel wool runs the risk of marring the finish to the point of causing a 'cloudy' look to the metal.

And the long-promised pics! I just received a battle pack of GP11 today, so I thought I'd snap some pictures of the whole set. Sorry for the crappy phone-cam, but it's all I have.

Remove the buttplate before working on it. Also check for the previous owner's info on an oilcard under the buttplate.
Please post some closeups of the fingergrooves, the area between the top and bottom foregrip and where the buttplate is up angainst the buttstock.

                          Cool looking wood.

Congratulations! Your stock looks nice, save the GP11 brass, even if you do not reload. Sell them or give them away, they are very good brass to reload.
BTW: GP11 are bi-metal and most ranges will not let you shoot it during summer time.
