    Black powder revolver questions?

    Hello everyone,

Well I have a few questions. I been thinking about getting a mid 1800's black powder Army revolver (replica) and wanted to know where in the so cal area one can be purchased I am located in Long Beach, or I could order one online. Ive been on several web sites and they do not ship to California. Is this true for all places? Also where can all the supplies to shoot it(cap-ball) be purchased from. Are you able to shoot it at an indoor range? I love history and just thought this would be a fun change from my XD-40 and my AR. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cabelas will ship it to your door. Completely legal. Most other mainstream sites will as well.
Most local gun stores will carry black powder or substitutes, as well as balls and caps. Powder and caps can be ordered online as well, but will incur hazmat shipping fees.

Indoor range? I don't know, I never tried that.

Fowler's in the City of Orange
      Stockade in Westminster
Old West Guns in La Puente
Bain and Davis in San Gabriel

They all have a modest selection of ball and cap revolvers so you can see a few in person. You can buy most of the supplies in the shop when you buy the gun. Online would probably get you the best prices and widest selection but if they won't ship to California I guess there's not much you can do.

I don't know of any indoor ranges that allow black powder, unfortunately.

I will add that I have (unintentionally) pissed people off shooting BP outdoors.

The smoke drifted in front of them while they were zeroing their megabuck super AR-whatever or the smell caused them to have flashbacks to the Civil War or Berkeley or ???

I generally ask nearby shooters these days if the BP will bother them. Most don't even know what I am talking about.

Black powder sounds like alot of fun. Really different then just grabing some rounds out of a box sticking them in a mag and shotting. I like the idea of having to put in some work to shoot. Anything to looj for when buying (brand-type- ect.) ?

Don't get anything with a brass frame. Other than that, it comes down to how big of a boom you want to make. If you want to shoot cheaply, go for an 1851 Navy in 36 cal. If you really want to impress people, scare little children and set off car alarms, get a Walker. Uberti or Pietta, these days doesn't make much of a difference. Best price online is at S&S Firearms.

There's nothing wrong with brass frames. You just have to make sure you don't load them hot is all. RTFM and FOLLOW IT.

Walker '47 has everything you need. And, they will answer any question you can think of. http://www.walker47.com/

If you want to buy BP, don't buy it on line. The Hazmat fees will kill you.

Indoor BP, never heard of one. Maybe somewhere, but not that I've heard. When you are at Walker's, they can provide you with info on where to shoot.

Ruger old army is the best thing going. You can't hurt it with any amount of powder you can cram into the chambers.

I like Goex and dislike pyrodex. Pre-lubed patches are available that make loading easier and help prevent chain fires.

True, but they don't make them anymore. I'm starting to see folks ask rediculous prices for them.
