    modified 1892

Does a winchester 1892 made in 1900 with a 44 mag. barrel installed in the 1960's have to be transferred thu a FFl ?Does the 44mag barrel disqualify it as a C&R. Thanks.

    I don't believe so, but I'm a C&R Poser..
Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

I belong to the group that uses firearms, and knows which bathroom to use.

Tis better to have Trolled & lost, Than to never have Trolled, at all.

I believe you are fine... its the date of the receiver that matters, not the date of the barrel or any other replacement part.

      anyone else?

I have heard that once the thing is modified it loses it's
C&R status. Just what ive heard and I hear a lot of BS so take it for what it's worth.

Was just told this at local gun store, again, whatever that's worth

As far a I know you can repair a C&R but it has to use original style parts. Example you can put a new made stock on your 1903a3 but it has to be the same style as the military one not a sportrized stock. Same as say the sights they can be new production they just have to be original style. With your i think you ok as long as it is the original caliber it came from the factory with. But i don`t think they made an 44 mag model1892 in 1900. Im sure cokebottle will chime in he`s a lot more knowledgeable.

i am curious.. if the modification was done 50+ years ago would the rifle re qualify as a C&R even in its new state? Ie.. the new 44 mag barrel was put on in 1960.

there are opinions out there (IANAL) that a c&r rifle modified by the military for military use maintains its C&R status.. ie.. 8mm mausers converted to 7.62 Nato by the Israelis. Could it be said that this 1892 was modified by a hunter for hunting use? Yes.. that is a massive stretch. But am curious about a rifle requiring C&R status if the modification were over 50 years old.

I believe that, in CA, to transfer a long gun without the FFL paperwork, the gun (receiver) just has to be >50 years old. I don't believe it has to qualify as a "C&R".

This is from the memory of a 60 y.o. brain, so...caveat emptor.

Honestly i cant say for sure with this. With things like the Israelis you have more then just one being done a couple thousand. On top of that it was done by the military not an individual. But with it being done 50 years ago i cant say for sure. Again this is how i interpreted it, i could be wrong best thing would probably ask ATF and get it in writing.

From what i have read a lot of 1892's were converted to 357 and 44 mag. during the 60's . Numrich arms( i beleive) sold the barrels . the original caliber of this one was either 38-40 or 44-40.Conversions were done gunsmiths.
