I can load 30-06. I want a shooter, not a safe queen. I don't mind sprucing up an ugly duckling.

Is there another rifle to consider?

The M1917 is far more rugged than a 1903. Period. They used to use those surplus actions to make .375 H&H and .458 Winchester rifles. But as the others have said, you can get a M1 Garand for $500-600 right now from the CMP. And it is likely to be in far better condition than any similarly priced 1903s or 1917s. Seriously, if you want a US service rifle, that is the way to go.

easier to reload for a bolt gun than a garand. also more accurate. a cheap garand is just that. 1917 is one of the strongest actions ever made and as accurate(in good shape) as a 1903. i'd say buy whatever you find first at the right price. always works for me.

The 1903A3 has a superior sighting system compared to the 1903 and the 1917.

The Garand is a classic that every American should own.

These are part of the Greek AF returns... and they are SWEEEET.

TE (throat erosion) =2 (0.302) and MW (muzzle wear) =1 (0.301) are new/near new specs. The metal on these rifles are also collector grade. The stocks are generally new CMP birch.

New barrels average ~ TE=1.5 (+/-1) and MW=0.5 (+/-0.5)

The GCA (Garand Collectors Association) did a bore wear test recently firing 7,000 M2 rounds through a TE=2/MW=0.8 Garand. Throat erosion was a strait-line at TE=1 per 2,000 rounds fired... MW was ~ 1/3 of TE.

The Military considered TE=5 for storage and reissue; TE=6 as serviceable to accompany troops overseas; and re-barrels atTE=10.

Do the math...

At ~$618.00 dollars delivered in a CMP plano hard case... these things are a steal.

You might even get a walnut USGI stock.


There is still the luck of the draw, but if you put a sticky on the order requesting a high SN (5.4 to 5.8 million) shooter... this is what they have been shipping.

I got two (2) that looked just like this... original park... sights click new...

5.4M TE=2+/MW=0+
5.8M TE=2+/MW=1+

Both shoot around 3" at 100 yrds. w/ Greek M2 ball at $0.50 a round. (also from the CMP)


These will not last... then it's back to M1s (for the same price) that really have been through a war.

Would like to point out that to buy from the CMP you must first take the needed steps and cost to become qualified to do so. Yes it is not real hard but you must do so.
