    KRAG-

hey guys, my old man and I went to the gun show in costa mesa and I saw him looking at those Krag rifles. I know he is not at all interested in the sporterized rifles, just the originals. Does anybody know some good places for him to search?

The krag surplus rifles got a bit popular a few years ago, they pop up in used gun shops from time to time, without knowing your location all I can suggest is to call your local shops and inquire and/or check the classifieds regularly on calguns - I haven't seen one in the bay area for quite some time but I ran into 5 of them in Tacoma/Olympia. Otherwise, its up to gunbroker and the other auction sites. You may want to narrow your search a bit more, is he interested in a carbine or a rifle?

Factory ammo can be very hard to find. Load-X in Santa Rosa does have them.

Factory ammo is only made once a year by the Remchesters. I saw Remington 180 gr. softnose for sale in the most recent Cabella's flier, so they must run it in the spring.

I shoot .30-40 quite a bit (not in a Krag) and have found new brass is usually available from Midway and other big dealers; can be mailed.

My brother bought a new Win Hi-wall replica .30-40 from C.Sharps last year (he really liked mine!) and we had to search for ammo, since he doesn't handload. We found plenty by asking on the various gun websites: www.gunboards.com, www.24hourcampfire.com, www.rugerforum.com, www.leverguns.com, etc., etc. Some of it was brand new softnose; some was REALLY old 220 gr. full patch military ammo made by commercial mfrs. around WWI. (I kept that; DON'T tell him!).

I see Krags for sale on the "Trader" forum of www.gunboards.com fairly often. Since many of them are legal antiques, you can just have them UPSed to you.

If your Dad is a reloader, he can use .303 brass, size it through a .30-40 sizing die and trim it to Krag length. That makes finding brass a lot easier.

If he has any Enfields, he'll want to mark the ones he modifies but they work fine...
