is there any way to polish out the action in the yugo m48

Do you mean to make the bolt operate more smoothly?

Or are you just talking about cosmetics?

well a little bit of both. the problem is when the safety is ingaged the action slides wonderfully smooth but turn it and wam sticky as hell. dont know why. but if i could smooth the action it would be great. sorry for the spelling errors i am veryveryvery tired right now

Sometimes polishing the bolt raceways of the receiver can smooth out the action, but since you say that the bolt works smoothly when the safety is engaged it sounds more like a problem with the bolt parts themselves.

Have you really cleaned the bolt? Totally stripped it down and scrubbed all of the parts? I'm no expert on the interaction of Mauser bolt parts, but one difference I can see when the safety is engaged is the cocking piece moves away from the back of the bolt body a tiny bit. You could check for hardened debris or corrosion at that contact point.

A quick fix to clean cosmoline out of the bolt is to boil it (disassembled) in soapy water. Then quick drying with a fan. Oil and reassemble. Check to make sure you magazine is functioning properly as well as you trigger. These places may cause problems as you described.

(I have contemplated a pot large enough to boil an entire mil-surp stock to get the cosmoline and gunk out of it. Just low on the financial priority list.

+1 on getting the internals properly scrubbed and lubricated.

To get the M48 bolt polished to a smooth mirror finish, I use a 4" cotton buffing wheel ($3.00 from Big Lots) (as pic below) and some polishing Rouge (primarily used for polishing jewelry, so it is very low abrasion), and mounted it on my drill press.

you don't want to eat cosmoline if you don't have to... It won't kill you... but it makes gumbo taste like cr@p

I will go along with cleaning the bolt inside and out. You want to smooth it? Cycle the thing 500 times. Use a good lithium grease all the time your working the bolt then wipe it off. Not scrubbed clean just rub it off and cycle it another 100 or 200 times.Never never remove any metal with any power tool!!!
These rifles while old by your standards where shot very little and are tight. I have seen rough looking one that still had tight actions.

well yeah these were pretty much obslete as soon as they came off the line. there very little wear on the metal so i think it was never shot other than the guy i bought it off of. and i didn't want grind anything off i just wanted to see if there was any way to smooth it without grinding. i have been cycling it as much as people around me can stand. i'll just keep it up.
