C&R Ruger Mk I, dissemble question

I managed to find a 1957 Ruger Mark 1. The pistol looked pretty good for being 54 years old. Currently in lock up for 10 days.

While I am waiting, I have been watching video about how to dissemble the Ruger. Would this be an okay thing to do? I want to clean out all the gunk. Would this be better handled by my gunsmith?
Life is like having a map with precise directions and exact stops, you find out that your directions and stops change as you progress further down your original map.

Absolutely do it yourself - It's a bit tricky though -

Get the manual. The instructions are very good. I've had 4 & still don't reassemble w/o the "destructions" .
Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

I belong to the group that uses firearms, and knows which bathroom to use.

Tis better to have Trolled & lost, Than to never have Trolled, at all.

I take my 1971 Ruger MK 1 apart often. Just don't take further down than removing the upper receiver off the frame and removing the bolt from the upper receiver. If the upper receiver hasn't been taken off of the frame in a while, you may have to tap it off with a soft piece of wood. It takes a bit of practice and some patience to get the pistol back together. I suggest when you get it figured out, write yourself some notes.

I have to do that every time I have to remove the bolt and trigger group out of my Browning 10 GA. BPS. Some guns are a bit more complicated than others.

You were able to start this thread, so you're beyond able to dis/reassemble the Ruger.

Use a shoelace to pull out the backstrap lever. Don't use a screwdriver!

Coincidentaly I just spent the last 3 hours putting a MKIII back together. I watched a dozen on line videos and still wasn't getting it. Then I read the instruction manual and had it done in 10 minutes. If I can do a MKIII I would think you can handle a MKI. Just have the written instructions in front of you.

Remove any magazine. Cycle it. Peek into the chamber to make sure. Repeat. Make sure it's empty.
Point in safe direction, pull trigger.
Release mainspring housing lever in back of grip. Pull it down out of receiver to release Bolt Stop Pin.
Slide barrel assembly forward. You may need to whack it forward with a rubber or leather mallet.
Grasp bolt and pull rearward to remove.
Remove recoil spring and rod. stop here, for now.

                Reassemble:

Push hammer down toward rear, parallel with slide rails. Replace bolt into barrel.
                Replace barrel
Smack back of bolt to fully seat, while grasping barrel so it doesn't get knocked off to make sure barrel and bolt are aligned with the rear.
Replace the Bolt Stop Pin fully in! Not part way
Now the tricky part! Point barrel upward, with bolt stop seated and mainspring housing dangling.
Pull trigger then push in housing and press lever to lock. Cycle action.
                Done.
If you want to practice doing it several times, remove the firing pin and reassemble so you don't ding the chamber!

i use a paper clip as a mainspring "tool" works great

also make your self a alum can blast shield http://www.wiztechs.com/knightsrealm...lastshield.htm

anoughter tip is dont disassemble too much you can damage the chamber when you dry fire and will need a chamber iron to fix it

and dont remove the upper every time you clean the weapon the lug will start to loosen up and make for a sloppy fit

also the trigger and grip frame disassemble is not that hard but no real reason to do it unless you are upgrading the parts

enjoy you pistol i think they are the best .22 around

dont use the screw driver for the mainspring it will mark it up over time

People make a big deal about how difficult the Ruger MK series pistols are to disassemble. The first time yes, they're kind of tricky. But if you can follow directions and have a memory longer than a goldfish, they're pretty easy. Look at the different youtube vids on how to do it and follow along. After 5 or 6 times, you can do it with your eyes closed.
