    CMP M1 Garands...

I'm intrigued by how cheap the CMP Springfields and HRM's are. Just wondering how the Service Grade rifles are, condition wise when you get them? Is there a difference between HRA and Springfield?

I'm prior service, and was wondering if 'military' constitutes as criteria to apply to get an m1.

    Thank you.

Here's a great thread from today from emilio: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=440473

    And here's the eligibility requirements:

I'd get a nice HRA since CMP has a lot of them now. You can find Springfields everywhere.

Service grade's are the way to go. My late-50's HRA just about shoots MOA off a rest, and she's a beauty too. =)

HRA's are likely to be in better condition, and of a newer build.

Later is better then? Or generally speaking? Thanks.

Later is only better if that's what you want. It really depends on if you want to have the chance of getting a war time receiver, or just want a nice shooter. You aren't going to get a WWII receiver from anything other than an SA in SG at the moment. But even then it's a shot in the dark whether you are actually going to get a WWII one, or a post war.

I've got a 45 SA receiver with a 51 SA barrel that shoots very well. And in my opinion, having a WWII receiver with a Korea era barrel is awfully friggin cool.

Service Grade is definitely the best all around option unless you are hell bent on having GI wood. At which point it would be better to get a Field Grade. But then you might get a turd. If you want a guaranteed great shooting rifle, and don't care about it's history, get the Special.

I'm fully aware that unless I drop a grand on a garand, there will be no way of accomodating the "historic", "Great shooter" AND "good to go condition".

I'm happy with what you guys just mentioned.

            Thank you for the input.

As far as I understand, prior service does satisfy a qualification criteria. Service grade HRA's are in excellent condition. If you're looking for shooter, these are the way to go.

If you look back at some older thread (febuary-ish), there were a few of us that all ordered SA Service grades around the same time. We all enclosed a "sticky note" with our orders for GI wood and a WW2 receiver. If I recall correctly I was the only one who got GI wood, a WW2 receiver (April 43), and as an added bonus I got lockbar rear sights.
Now although I didnt need my DD214 to fill a requirement, I went ahead and sent it in just on the off chance they gave us prior/current service members any kudos. So did I just get lucky or did I get "special treatment"? Who knows.

Not necessarily true. You can get a great shooter as a Service Grade in the $595 department. You're just tossing the dice as to whether or not it is going to have any war time history if you go mail order. But if you do want that chance, you should get an SA. HRAs are very nice and some people are very, very happy with them.

The 45/51 M1 I have was bought for $595 and delivered in great condition. 2 war periods, and great metal finish. It had a new CMP stock, which was very nice, and I put a nice USGI stock on it for $80, then sold the CMP wood for $130.

If you do want something with history, you can try to get a person who will be visiting the store to do a purchase on your behalf. You'll have a much better chance than the luck of the draw mail order. And you'll still be in the $595 or less price range. Or, just take the plunge on the SG via mail order, drop in a sticky for what you want, and hope they've got something nearby that fits your request.

Top guy in this shot is a SG. The bottom one is a FG in a new CMP stock I've been messing with.

Ordering Service grade is like being "middle class." You can earn 25k a year or 150k a year.

I ordered a Springfield Service grade and the stock was beat up but it was extrememly accurate. I got a HRA Service grade and it was as good as new. It seemed like it wasn't even broken in yet.

I used my dd214 to qualify also; it made the process very smooth!
