    Finnish Mosins

I am getting an urge to get one of these. What's the deal with these?

What should I look for and what do you guys recommend.

    -Prices
    -Differences in the models? (m28, m27, m39)
    -Antique category?

    Thanks!

...with liberty and justice for all. Void where prohibited, offer not valid everywhere, price may change. See Big Brother for details.

The M27 and M28 types are supposed to be the most accurate, and also are harder to find than a M39. and of course cost more.

Also, I read very few of the M39's actually saw combat as production began late into the Continuation War.

I'm not that familiar with the fin 91/30, but they are supposed to be superior to the Russian model, and apparently saw the most combat as they were captured from Russia on battlefield, and were in Fin arsenals when Finland became independent country from Russia.

The REALLY good news is that all the components and data for the Finnish D-166 loads (VERY ACCURATE) are available from Lapua and Vitivuari. Bad news: $$$$$$

One thing about Finnish Mosin, besides being popular among collectors and shooters, they have the least number of production compare to any C&R available. Eventually almost all, specially M24, M27, M28, M28/30 are getting harder to find.

For your first Finnish Mosin, I would suggest one of 3 options:

              1) M39 - SAKO or VKT are the least expensive of the M-39s and both are great shooters. If you have a C&R, www.gunsnammo.com is a good place to buy from.

              2) M91 - Early 40s production Tikka or VKT M-1891 infantry rifles are inexpensive and fun to shoot. I just bought a beautiful VKT for around $200 and it is very accurate. These are the long barreled mosins, the overall length is around 51".

              3) M91-30 Tikka barreled rifles are way undervalued. There were only around 14,000 made in 1943 and 1944 compared to millions of the russian 91-30s. There have been a few posted up recently that people have bought for $150 to $250 and they are usually some of the most accurate finns ever made.

I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.

Finn Mosins are almost the best kept secret of C&R's. Where else can a guy get a rifle where only 6000 were produced and who knows how many actually survived for less that $450?(actually less than $350 now)

You don't even need a C&R Lic. Most of the time they offer some that classify as antiques. All you need is a CDL. or Cal ID.

For your first Finn, I'd recommend an M39 from gunsnammo. They are highly accurate rifles (most Finns are). The 28/30 and the m39 are, as a group, one of the most accurate surplus rifles out there. With the right loading they can be in the K31/Swede M96 accuracy club.

Alright, the gunsnammo website list some m39 as antiques. Are those just as good as the other non antique rifles?
It seems that the going rate is 300 and up. Is there anything Specific that I should be looking for?

Antique receivers are fine, they work just the same as non-antique receivers. They have the added benefit of not needing an FFL. My 28/30 is built on an 1899 tula receiver, it missed antique status by a year, but it's the best shooting mosin I have.

As far as stuff to look for, that depends on if you are looking for more of a shooter, a collector, or a mix of the two.

Looking for a shooter. I thought that all the Finns were collectable.

True, all are, but some more so than others. As far as shooters go, bore condition trumps all. Any of the rifles listed with "mirror sharp bore" are good buys. The ones with a matching bolt and a mirror bore are even better buys.

Sounds good. Thanks for the advice. I'll take a look at the gunsnammo site and research these Finnish mosins a little bit more.

So just to clarify, those with the antique receivers ship right to your door, correct?
