Don't tell that Mr Kalashnikov!!! He'd prob use an AK to cave your head in! But the resemblance is striking.

From what ive read, the outer design resembles an stg44 but the insides are totally different. Cant say ive field stripped an stg44 so i dont know if its true.

its an over complicated AK47. the later models are more reliable than the early ones. supposedly its the first gas piston type rifle invented. i could be wrong but thats what ive read/heard

towards the end of the war, if you notice, in some of the old ww2 footage, some of the allied American troops actually use the stg44! they must have picked them off of a dead German. its strange to see a GI with his M1 strapped to his back and a stg44 hanging bu his side! that would have been a GREAT choice to send home!!

The Garand had a piston and op rod.

I've seen a couple photos of GIs with MP40s but no STG44s. I suspect the GIs with the MP40s were support types as it is dangerous to carry the other side's small arms since your own guys have a tendency to shoot at the sound of the gun. I've seen some action photos of German infantry with M1 carbines. They didn't seem to have the weapons sound concern. The Germans like our carbine and the Jeep but didn't seem interested in any of our other small arms

Actually, this is a pretty common accusation at this point. At least on gun boards.

Surely the Russians had examples of Stg44 well before the Reich collapsed.

Obviously, the AK47 emulates the Stg44. But the operating system borrows much from the M1 Garand. In addition, it can be argued that influences were drawn from the SVT's , SKS and other prototypes.

oh, let me rephrase that small detail...

SLIGHTLY BEFORE the collapse of the third reich..happy?

Generally accepted as the world's first assault rifle, the StG44's effect on post-war arms design was wide-ranging, as evidenced by Mikhail Kalashnikov's AK-47, and later in the U.S. M16 and its variants. The Soviet Union was quick to adopt the assault rifle concept. The AK-47 used a similar-sized intermediate round and followed the design concept, but was mechanically different.[10]

The Soviets captured prototype STG 43s when the 6th Army surrendered at Stalingrad. If nothing else it confirmed the basic concept was workable to the Soviets.
