    m1 sights keep coming loose

    Hello,

It seems that no matter how hard I tighten the screws that hold the elevation and windage knobs together, they always come loose after like 40 rounds and when I go to redadjust my sights, the knob just spins. Is this normal?

Its really hard to diagnose without seeing. Take sights apart, are the threads stripped on the elevation/pinion?
If they look good you may need to replace the windage knob. Does it click when tightened?

I took it apart, everything looked okay, but I couldn't see very well inside the windage knob. I tightened the screw on the windage knob until I heard a 'click' from the elevation knob from tightening the windage screw all the way.

Anyway, I turned the elevation knob all the way up and it doesn't go down if I push down on it with my thumb, but when I went back to check the screw on the windage knob, it came loose a little less then 1/4 of a turn right after I had screwed it tight.

Now this alone isn't bad, but after ffiringover 50 rounds, that's when the sight starts to rattle loose from recoil. It makes me wonder if its normal cuase you would think it taks more then that cause in a combat situation you shouldn't have to tighten up those sights after so many rounds? I dunno, maybe im being anal and this normal and I should just keep an eye on it and keep tightening the sights after everytime I shoot or fieldstrip the gun.

I've also noticed that the gas plug starts to come loose at about the same time and I need to keep tha nice and tight so that leads me to believe no matter how hard I tighten things, the recoil is just so powerful the screws eventually rattle out.

I have a chance to send the sights back, but I just wanna be sure im not being a complete dork before I send them back. Sorry if I sound anal, but I've never delt with peep sights before let alone a Garand and I have no one on hand to show me the ropes

I forgot to add, when I tighten the windage knob all the way, if im holding the elevation knob, it will kind of 'roll over' with no click, but if im just tightening the windage knob, then the click comes from the elevation knob turning 'cause the screw on the windage knob wont go further. Hope that makes sense lol.

No its not normal for sights to loosen under recoil and no it makes no sense I have owned over 20 Garands and never had the sights loosen under recoil.
If I had them in my hand I could find the problem but from your description I dont know
Is this a CMP Garand? If so send a e-mail explaining the problem. They will forward it to a Armorer who will contact you
As far as the gas screw, make sure the threads are clean and dry use a 1/4 inch drive ratchet with extension tpo tighten it. A screwdriver just doesnt give enough torque
