    looking for a k98

So like the title says im looking for a k98. I'm open to an original German one, or a RC (because thats part of the history too). Of coarse I would prefer a german one or an RC with the marking still intact. Where can I get one? And I'm sure im beating a dead horse with this but whats the deal with Mitchell's Mausers? From what I have read they are either new made on ww2 german equipment, or are they made from a bunch of real mausers but then restamped so they are all matching. Either way they dont sound legit. Thanks for all your help. I know big 5 has had a few but i would rather not go thru a 10 dsy wait and pay tax and dros for a c and r rifle. And I'm in Palm Springs if anyone nearby was thinking of selling one.
    Thanks!!

MM's are faked, don't buy from them. Your best bet is going to be hiting gun shows, stores, and watching the for sale ads here.

thats what i thought about mm. I keep checking here I trust calguns more than a gun show, plus i would get caught up in the moment of finding one and knowing my luck i woul pay double for a MM.
mosinnagantm9130 Thanks for the heads up on them.
And I LOVE my mosin nagant 91/30, 3 of my friends have all bought one after shooting mine

Mitchell's are obvious. go to their site to see what they look like, Mauser.org

the stocks have been cleaned and sanded, the bolt is silver for whatever reason (they were never silver in the War), they've been re-blued, re-stamped and misrepresented. they actually remove original serial numbers and restamp them with their own to make them "all matching"

they are not all matching, they were not kept in military storage until they found them, and they have no collector value.

they are only cleaned, misrepresented Russian captures. they have absolutely no original snipers either. those are so unbelievably rare it's laughable for them to claim so.

if you've got a C&R license, you can find them on gunbroker, or like 91/30 said, you can find them available on sales ads here

First decide what what you want spend. When talking all matching to RC your price can go from $2000 to $200. I personnaly have RC's. Ive paid anywhere from $425 to $225 for them.

I have a couple of VZ.24 Czech mausers or are you only wanting a 98. Also have a M48 Yugo matching.

Big +1 here. K98's are a minefield if you don't know what you are doing.

That's why I stick to RC's, there's much less chance that anything is faked, and if it's faked, you aren't out hundreds, possibly thousands, of dollars. Someday I'll do more research and go after a nice bolt mis-match, maybe even all matching, but for now I stick with RC's.

I'm thinking I want to spend up to $400. What should I look for? And what to avoid besides mm?

JGSales has RCK98s occasionally. Looks like they're in stock now....

I've rarely heard anything bad about JGSales so they might be a good start for your search. I've been fighting the urge to pick one of those up for myself for about a year now.

First you are chopping up historic vintage rifles and sticking them in cheap and nasty looking plastic "dildo" stocks that look like some kind of futuristic sex toy that gay space aliens stick up each other's butts.

It looks like they only have that one. The description is pretty clearly talking about a single rifle.

Not the cheapest option, but Big 5 had some a while back, you may want to call around and see if there are still any in stock. The best deals I have seen have been in the marketplace.

$400 will get you a nice Russian capture German 98k.

                        check out Allen's Armory

if you would still like the 8mm Mauser punch but would like to pay a little less, check out the Yugoslavian m24/47 or Czech VZ-24

like has been mentioned, check out the guns people are selling on this site. you could find a gem for a decent price

They come and go pretty frequently at JGSales.

I'm not sure I'd trust Big 5 for anything other than a Mosin or a new rifle. Most other milsurps I've seen there look like they've been dragged behind a truck, then left in the rain to rot.
Might get lucky though. Just inspect anything you buy there VERY THOROUGHLY.

Actasully, Big 5 has been stocking some decent RC k98's recently. At $399.00, they're at the upper end of the RC price scale. But I've seen a couple there with very solid, shootables bores.

At least at Big 5 you can touch before you buy. Shopping ain't buying, but it is still fun.
