    Hi Guys,
Been lurking, reading about all these COOL mosin's out there and since I'm only planning on buying one I need to know the diffrences between models. I personally perfer shorter rifles.

So what should I look for if I was gonna head over to big5??

ie. bent bolt, carbine, special years, matching numbers ect.

    Thanks again!

      First part of the lowdown:

A Nagant is a revolver designed by some Belgian dude.

A Mosin-Nagant, or just Mosin, is a bolt action rifle or carbine designed primarily by Sergei Mosin, and which also incorporated some features of a design by some Belgian dude named Nagant.

shorter rifles are the carbines (M38s, M44s, M53s) and they're harder to get now and will run around $200. Big 5 rarely has these

the rifles (91/30 as a standard rifle) is easily obtained for $80. they've mostly been through a refurbishment process so they won't always match. as long as the bolt number matches the receiver chances are it's fine to fire.

The most common Mosins are the 91/30's which are the long (48 1/2") rifles normally available at Big 5 or in the Marketplace forum here. They are also available as mail order C&R's from J&G and AIM Surplus as well as others.

The Hex receiver 91/30s usually go for a tad more money than the round receivers although there is no real difference between the functionality of Hex or round receiver. Most Mosins were arsenal refurbished and then preserved in cosmoline. If the receiver and bolt serial numbers match then there should not be any headspace issues.

The shorter Mosins are the carbines. The two you will frequently see mentioned are the M38 and the M44 both are 40". The M38 did not have a bayonet while the M44 has a folding bayonet attached to the side. The M38's don't show up as often in the Marketplace while the M44's are not terribly uncommon. AIM just got a shipment of the M44's in and they are charging about $200 a piece. The carbines are noted for their fireballs. Google Mosin fireballs for examples.

7.62x54r.net is an outstanding resource for Mosin information. It is a privately owned site (as is Calguns) that is specific to collecting Mosins in their original military configuration. No Bubba topics allowed.

As stated Nagant has come to refer to the M1895 revolver, also available from J&G.

If you don't already have an 03FFL then I suggest you get one as you have some catching up to do.

If you're interested in checking out a M44 in person, the last I checked the big5 on Stevens Creek in San Jose and the one in Campbell both had them in stock.

First off, only getting one? Ya good luck with that. If you insist your going to try and only have one Mosin, look into the Finnish rifles. Lately the M39 seems to be going for steals. I got mine last week for $260 and I thought I got a screamin deal until I saw some go for $225!!! Im seeing M27's and M28's not sell for $200!!

Most of the Finns seem to fly under the radar. M24's and M28/30's still pull a premium when found it seems but the others can be had at really good prices.

Just about any complete Finn is a steal under $200, I've noticed recently that the Finn built M91's aren't selling for much more than $200, and they are sometimes under that price.

Finn prices really took a dump with the economy, so if you can buy Finns, now is a great time to do it.
