Yeah Rock-Ola or maybe a commercial copy. No serial numbers? Hmmmm.

Pictures would be helpful to figure this mystery out.

It should have a serial number and quite a few things will affect the value. Like I said pictures would help. More info. Etc.

P.S. Rock-Ola is one of the least manufactured.

Rock Island Armory carbines were made in the early 1980s, so I don't know which war his grandfather would have brought it back from. http://www.m1carbinesinc.com/carbine_rockisland.html
          Revolvers are not pistols

pistol nouna handgun whose chamber is integral with the barrel
Calling a revolver a "pistol" is like calling a magazine a "clip", calling a shotgun a rifle, or a calling a man a woman.

At the very bottom of that page "DO NOT use a Rock Island Armory receiver that does not have a serial number or appears unfinished as it's highly likely it's unsafe to shoot."

So if it is Rock Island and no serial number. I recommend you not shoot it!

If its Rock-Ola it has to have a serial number. It might be under the rear sights.

              I don't understand.

              Please explain.

are you talking about where the sling attaches to the stock?
If so, why would someone fill this pocket?

They did some funky stuff to our M1 Carbines. That's for sure!
