Question for S&W guys.

I am looking for information regarding a very old handgun.
It came from a Union Pacific Railway Detective.
The markings on the pistol are as follows.
Top of the barrel Pat. numbers:
Smith Wesson Springfield Mass. USA
Apr 9 1889 Mar 27 1894 Aug 4 1896 Dec 22 1896 Oct 4 1898 Oct 8 1901
Dec 17 1901 Sept 2 1902 July 7 1903

Left side of barrel 32 Long CTG

Serial number on bottom of butt/pistol grip 22592
and on the rear of the cylinder along the outer edge.


3966 is stamped in two places. On the frame where it is hidden when the cylinder is shut and once on the inside of the crane just above the hinge.

Looking for any information regarding how many made etc.

Sounds like a .32 Hand Ejector Mod of 1903, "1st Change" edition. Manufactured From 1904-1906, Approximately 31,700 manufactured. It most likely has fixed sights, but there were a few that had target adjustable sights. There is a possibility based on the description of the barrel that it is a "2nd Change" model, or It could just be a late production "1st Change" with a "2nd Change" barrel. 1st Change models did not have the "32 Long CTG" markings on it based on the Supica Nahas Book that the above information comes from. Thanks for the information. My friend will be pleased. I was wondering if maybe Union Pacific purchased a quantity of these handguns for the use of their detectives. I would rate the finish as 90+ percent. Only slight holster wear. looks like it was rarely fired. Any way to determine value or if U.P. purchased them?

If the history is worth $30 to you - write to S&W and they will give you a report - currently it takes about 12 weeks to get back...they can usually tell you when it was made and where it was shipped.
