Civil War Reenactment - Costa Mesa

Went out to the "Battle of Costa Mesa" this morning and afternoon to check out the events. Pretty good stuff. I hadn't been to a reenactment in years, and though I come from the south, where hundred of reenactors show up for the most trivial event or festival where they get a chance to (fake) shoot at their fellow history buffs, the rolling terrain and high grass of Fairview park gave the battle a neat look, and it was quite enjoyable. the two field guns that the confederate forces brought out were pretty cool too. Enjoy the pictures!

Being a Florida boy myself, I just had to get a picture with the battle flag of the 2nd Florida Infantry - though my anscestors fought with the 4th Alabama and Hilliards Legion, they weren't represented.

Thanks for posting. I am glad to see reenactments taking place, especially when they are local.

Fairview park is on Placentia ave in Costa Mesa, right off one of the bays. I had never been there before the reenactment, and my GPS found it right away.

Those are cute little "toy" cannons. They look like 1/2 and 3/4 scale to me or, was one a mountain howitzer? You'll have to come up to Moorpark in November and check out the Confederate gun line. My unit always has 8 full sized (two of which are originals) guns in play. The 3rd US comes down and brings a 6 up team or two to actually position guns on the field with horses.

Seeing them up close, I didn't think they looked like 1/2 or 3/4, and a Mountain howitzer seems right, and they were definitely not a full fledged field gun battery - but I am far from an expert on period artillery, so they could very well have been a scale mock up. I'm an Infantryman by trade, and a history buff, so I got far more into the rifles, pistols, and bayonets than the big guns.

Definitely have to check out Moorpark. my girlfriend tolerated the reenactment reasonably well, but did admit it was kinda dorky. Thats what she gets for dating a West Pointer who studied military history!

I just read about it in the paper, but you can probably check out the American Civil War Society's website - i wanna say ACWS.com , but google it just in case.
