Ok so how old were the Newspapers? 1865 through 1918?

I suppose a log cabin could have an attic, but is it a cabin at that point?

They may not have fired it themselves, but it looks like the nipple has been replaced by a #11 instead of a musket cap. Doesn't mean it is diminished in value or a forgery though.

Interesting, Is that the orig screw for the cock? Free from rust or pitting...

Its a Model 1863, Type 1, Springfield rifle-musket made in 1863. I'd grade it no better than "good". I'd value it a $800.00 plus or minus $200.00 depending on the venue where you were selling it (worth more back east, etc.). Add a hundred bucks for the bayonet. My 2 cents. Geologyjohn

I have my GGF civil war records and that rifle after the Civil War could be puchased or if yours got lost it would cost the soldier $33.33 . BTW I'll take it :}
