If you want a great quality, accurate carbine hold out for a 91/59.

Thanks for all the great advice everyone! My son has found a 91/30 for $100 FTF. While it is not what he really wants, I think he is going to jump on it just for economic reasons. It is a hex receiver, clean, matching #'s with all accessories (bayonet, tools, etc.) and also comes with 20 rounds of ammo. He seems prett excited about the $$ savings and if it is clean, he will own a peice of history that should be a blast to shoot (for him anyways)

        nice.

just beware. he will soon be infected with Mosinitis. just one won't be enough. you'll find him wanting round receivers, laminated stocks, carbines, Finnish, and all other sorts of Mosins. it is a sickness

It is nice to know that my family is not the only one that suffers from that disease.

My parents always taught me that if you really like something, you better buy them up because they may not be around when you want to get more. Unfortunately they never taught me not to apply this to guns

I knew this disease was a problem when I found myself with 5 XD's as well as many other duplicate brands as well

          Disease for sure

Congratulations on your choice. Everything he learns with the 91/30 will work for the Mosin carbines he buys later. I said "buys later" because I have no doubt that after he spends some time with the 91/30 he will find that one Mosin isn't enough. My one Mosin turned into three 91/30's, one M38, three M44's and added two M39's this weekend.

If you use corrosive ammo, make sure to clean it properly! Sounds like a nice one...

Great find! A hex receiver with all that for $100 is nothing to scoff at.

Just don't let him go all tacticool with it >.>

I heard about that from a friend of mine. He was saying that certain sites will ban you if you mention changing a stock out or going tacticool

I actually was checking out some of the tacticool Mosin's and am starting to change my attitude about this gun. CG Member Kel-Tec-Inovations has a post where he had some pretty awesome looking setups. I was thinking something like this setup would be good for a burry gun in the back yard for when s*** hits the fan. Inexpensive, reliable, no record (C&R)

Sounds like your son knows what he wants. If you take him to a decent gun store he can handle all the above mentioned rifles. I know Martin B. Retting, Inc in Culver City as of last week has the carbine, 91/30 and M39. The M39 is a beast of a gun for a kid it feels heavier than the 91/30 and is reported to be balanced towards the muzzle.

I suggest you take him to Retting and let him feel and play with the actions and of course factor in the fact that he will grow real fast lol.

Man I barely purchased a 91/30 yesterday (which I hope turns out well) and I'm already thinking about a M38 and M44!!! It seems like Big5 doesn't carry them as much now so where should I look for a decent M38 or M44 at a reasonable price? Gun shows, local dealers, or private sellers?

Patience and the Calguns marketplace forum are your friends. I bought a 91/30, an M38, three M44's and two M39's locally from Calgunners, all in the last 6 months.

All of the above are good ideas, but you will probably get the best price from a private seller. With a private seller, you have no tax or DROS, so you can usually get lower prices.
