    CMP qualification question

I would really like to get my hands on a CMP garand. What is the simplest and cheapest way to qualify for purchase?
    Thanks

Here are the eligibility requirements you must meet:

I joined the Garand Collector's Association for $25.00 to meet the club requirement. The seasonal newsletter that comes with membership is excellent, and well worth the $25.00 in its own right.

I already had my FFL 03 C&R so that met the marksmanship requirement. There are several ways to meet this requirement without costing you a dime.

You will have to pay a notary for a jurat on the certification form. Mine was $10.00.

All told it was $35.00 to qualify, $65.00 if you include my FFL fees.

This doesn't include a copy of your birth certificate or passport. This can add more to the total if you don't already have one or the other to copy.

I hope this helps, good luck.

The GCA (Garand Collectors Association) it the easiest to join for the shooting organization requirement.

I took the form they have on line with me to the range and had the rangemaster give his signature for the safe gun handleing requirement.

The UPS store or one of those places notarized my forms and the rest is history.

I originaly got everything set up over a year ago to buy ammo but got a little side tracked buying Garands and a Carbine, I just recently received my first shipment of GREEK M2

I joined the california rifle and pistol assoc, had a cop bud stamp me off on shooting (a shooting pal and instructor) and away I went!. They are out of garands at the moment, but hang in there!. I bought a nice 1954 garand, followed by a 1903 springfield (best rifle I own).
        You talking to me?

Garands are now available for order. Delivery in 60 - 120 days.

Download the application from the CMP sales site. Download the marksmanship form from the CMP site, and have a range officer at a local range sign it.

Join Garand Collectors, and send in a copy of your application with your CMP paperwork.

+1 to the Garand Collectors Association. Price is reasonable. They submit your info directly to the CMP (although I'd also send in a verification to make sure you're covered), and your membership buys a subscription to a nicely done magazine (not very long, but an interesting read) on Garands which comes 3 or so times a year. Oh yeah, you can also sign up over the phone if you want.

            Re: the shooting requirement...

Many ways to fulfill this...as per the list posted above.

Two that might apply to some here are...

~ C&R license...send it in and your done, poof.

~DD-214 for those of us vets.

I've also read of people just getting signed off by someone at their local range...i.e. a letter.

The CMP requirements may seem like a bit of a hassle...especially if you can't eaily get the shooting requirement done. But it's worth putting in the effort, assembling the paperwork, getting to notary stamp, etc.

10 years from now when you have your Garand(s) and/or Carbine(s) and see what they sell for you'll be glad you did.

Not to mention, few rifles are more fun to shoot.

Thanks for the info on the GCA Locktime and Tony, didn't know about that organization.

I just emailed them and they answered that the GCA doesn't take memberships by phone, however they are mailing me an app (since my computer printer is down)

go shoot a CMP/ high power match

Most clubs will loabn you a garand to shoot the match and you might find some shooting buddies. And you can normally get a lot of "free" range time if you stick with it.

                San jose Zouaves is nice.....
