Garand Gas Nut

The gas nut on my Garand will come loose after a shot or two. At the very least, it makes the ejection pattern wild. The CMP manual says not to overtighten it. Is loc-tite something I can use? If so which kind?
I dont want to permanantly alter the nut or the tube in anyway for obvious reasons.

Forget using a screwdriver, it just doesnt get it tight enough.
First clean the threads well. Then either buy the right tool or you can us a 1/4 inch drive ratchet with extension. It fits perfectly.
You should also use a specia tool for holding the gas cylinder so as not to put pressure on the barrel splines. It is possible to hold it with padded channel locks etc.

Foesgth, You peened the cylinder? The cylinder doesnt move at all, its very tight and the splines are well defined.

Orlando, thanks for the info, I will try this first. The threads and everything are immaculate. Do you think that just proper tightening will hold it? Obviously you do, but what about loc-tite just hypothetically speaking?

Peening the slines has nothing to do with your problem.
You do not need locktight, If parts are not worn and threads are "clean" you just need to properly tighten the gas screw. You can put some torque on it without damaging anything

You can buy the "correct" tool for tightening the gas screw. Just thought you might already have a 1/4 inch drive already so you wouldnt have to buy anything.

Right, the correct tool will have to wait I'm afraid. I hope it works better than the "correct" tool I got to remove the gas piston from my M1 carbine...

I suppose anything will work better than the "tool" I was using, which was a butter knife...

I will get a cheap socket extension (if I dont already have one) from the Home Dee Pot or Harbor Freight. Thank you

Yes, thats what we are discussing.Its either that or dirty threads or worn threads
Its hard to get the gas screw tight with a big screwdriver or the combo tool
Thats why I recommended the 1/4 drive ratchet/extension or a gas screw wrench
