Caps for Pietta Revolver - What Fits?

    Looking for a straight answer.

I have been using Remington and CCI #11s. They fall off unless I pinch them a specific amount. Even then, it is 50/50 whether they fall off or not. If I pinch them, they don't fit in the capper. #10 are too small and don't seat.

Which caps fit these (Pietta 1858 Remington .44) without screwing around?

Barring a proper fit on the original nipples, are there any replacement nipple/cap combinations that work with 90%+ success?

look at Midway. They sell several kinds of replacement nipples last time I checked. As long as the thread pitch and size match, you should be able to replace them all in about 5 minutes. The new ones are usually a bit more standardized.

I use #11 CCIs. With a slight pinch they fit fine and stay put. I use an in-line brass capper which works, or sometimes just fit with my finger instead.

#10s are too tight and lead to ignition problems.

I would be happy to replace the nipples with any that had a verified matching cap. I think they are 6mm, no problem there, but the question remains, which nipples and which caps?

I have had the same experience with #10s.

With the #11's, I find that if I pinch them enough to stay on, they don't fit in the capper. Pinched a bit less, they fit the capper, but half of them fall off on the first shot.

The Pietta nipples seem to have a bit too much taper for commonly-available caps. Hence my frustration.

Order Treso nipples. Good fit for #11 caps without squeezing them oval.
I order mine from Track of the Wolf.

I like the Ampco bronze ones. You need one of the PIR models for a Pietta revolver.

#10 or #11. The 10's can be tight and sticky after firing. The 11's need to be pinched.
The only thing that is worse than an idiot, is someone who argues with one.

Thanks, but I am looking for a no-pinch solution. It doesn't seem that it should be so difficult to manufacture caps and nipples that fit each other properly.

I am looking forward to trying the Treso nipples I ordered, they shipped this morning.

agree on the tresso nipples. i had the same problem with the originals. Seems back east where you can get remington number 10 they fit more properly. However the number 10 cci are too tight. if you force them on then you usually have to hammer them twice for them to ignite. The number 11 do tend to fall off easily. then if you pinch them sometimes you round out the top not knowing. Then its like using a number 10 where you need to shoot them twice to ignite. One thing i tried which seemed to work. i put a dab of bore butter around each of the nipples. the dap of grease seemed to keep them in place preventing them from falling. Same time it kinda helped in keep cap frags in place. However the best overall solution was the replacement of the nipples with tresso.

The new nipples arrived today, they look good without as much obvious taper as the originals. Thanks, Kruzr!

I am looking forward to trying them out. Screwing around with the caps was taking up the majority of my loading time.

Remember to use some anti-seize grease on the new nipples.

Tried the new Treso bronze nipples yesterday.

They should be original equipment. The caps fit perfectly, no pinching required and they clear as they should once fired. I am quite pleased.

Looks like you found the solution, which is great. I didn't notice anyone mentioning Remington #10 caps.

I have 2 1860 Colts, and 1 1858 Remington, all of which are Pietta repros, and that's what I have been using for years. The caps fit fine with the factory nipples, and I just give them a slight squeeze so they'll fit a little more snug.
I love it when a plan comes together.
