    Scope Offset on a k31

So far I have maybe 6 or 7 emails asking about the offset of our scope mount on a k31. I'm just going to post a couple of my answers from a different C&R site to save me having to answer more emails.
That offset seems to bother a few guys.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

This one is to save me more email responses about the Clamp On and D/T mounts.

This is the M1C Garand Sniper, and the offset is the same on the M1D Garand Sniper.

The offset on the 1911 and k31 Drill/Tap mount is actually less than on the M1 Snipers. The k31 Clamp On is also no more of an accuracy issue than any M1 Sniper setup.

It shows that it hardly touches the receiver so no worries for any bluing damage.

With the right scope there's no reason in the world why you can't shoot 1,0000 yards with this system. You just
    need enough elevation travel.

A few more observation excerpts from a Canadian Sanctioned Swiss Shoot Meister, Carlos Diaopter, "Guisan", Swiss Militaria and Fireams Expert, Swiss Rifles expert "Parashooter" and Distinguished Naval Marksman , Camp Perry and Quantico competitior, R.L. Steinberg.

Buddy, first think about the M1D Garand Sniper. Its offset to the left actually even more than the k31 is offset to the right.

Zero the rifle in first at 100 ayrds. Rezero it at 200 yards. After that the POI difference from 100 to 300 and beyond will be something you won't be able to determine anyway.
The only way you'd be able to measure POI differences it is in a solid firing device like the bullet manufactureres use and measure it with calipers from 100 to 400 yards.

Insignificant compared to the bullet drop and wind deflection.

Sight in range is the focus point. The further away that point is, the less it matters.

If the offset is 1" and sight in range is 100yds, then then POI moves left 1 " at 200 yds, 2" left at 300yds, 3" left at 400yds. About the same effect as a 10 mile/hr wind effect

If the offset is 1" and sight in range is 200yds, then then POI moves left 1 " at 400 yds, 2" left at 600yds, 3" left at 900yds. About the same effect as a 4 mile/hr wind effect.

"Right handed shooters should buy the drill and tap model since their shooting eye is positioned on the left side of the buttstock."

I have to disagree strongly with this assertion. The clamp-on mount works very well for most right-shoulder, right-eye shooters. Unless an individual has unusually thick jowls and/or close-set eyeballs, the relatively low and narrow comb on the K31 allows the right eye to align very comfortably with the right-offset scope - with the added benefit of secure cheek-stock contact without any added padding.

Conversely, most left-shoulder, left-eye shooters are well-served by the drill-and-tap mount.

I have to agree with Parashooter. The slight offset to the right is no obstacle to precision shooting for a right-handed right eye dominant shooter.

I do have one K31 with a drill & tap mount on the left side. I bought it that way several years ago, more out of curiosity than anything else. It is bloody impossible to shoot right handed using the right eye. However, when I started getting blind spots in my right eye from diabetic retinopathy a few years ago, I tried shooting it right handed, but using my left eye, and that worked quite well.

The scopes are offset to the left on the M1C and M1D. The USGI "sniper" leather lace-on/screw on cheekpads were designed to help the right-hand shooter get his right eye behind the ocular of the scope (those things were never issued for the 03A4). I was never really comfortable with either of those rifle/scope combos, either. To each his own ....
