I only own Eastern Bloc rifles, so I shoot a fair amount of corrosive ammo and I can agree with most the people here. All you need to do is pour some hot water with a little soap or Windex down the barrel and on anywhere that salt may have gotten. After that, just dry it and clean it like any other rifle.

Your concern with corrosive ammo is that the salt in the primers attracts moisture and rusts.

Ammonia has always been a popular ingredient for home made bore cleaning concoctions because of its ability to remove copper fouling. I think that as recipes got handed down over the years the chemistry/reasons behind the ingredients got lost in the fog of time. And since the only water included in most recipes probably came from a household ammonia solution, the myth kind of makes sense.

But for 99% of the internet gun owners, it probably got started by the Empire Arms website.
Not to mention that it takes industrial strength ammonia (like 10%) to dissolve copper fouling. My home made copper remover is 2 parts 10% ammonia, one part dishwashing detergent. Not only will this not remove corrosive salts, it will cause corrosion is you do not remove it with solvent.

It's really simple - water dissolves salt.

Hoppes #9 is formulated for corrosive primers, just like GI bore cleaner is. How long have corrosive primers been around, and how long has Hoppes been around? Think they would have stayed in business if the product didn't work?
I've run a test going on 6yrs now with two Mosin M-44's, one gets cleaned with Windex or water, the other gets cleaned with Hoppes.
There is absolutely no difference in the bore condition.
