I'm curious also. I was researching this the other day. The price despite on sale still seems fairly high after doing some research online. Then again I don't know anywhere else in socal that sells them. I wonder how they rank up with Mosins? ESP the two you can get from Big 5, as to which would most likely be better quality. -
< ---- another guy asking this. I have thought about one myself.
anyone out there?Comment

I just recently purchased one and picked it up the other day from its stint in jail. I originally bought it for $399 and when I went to pick it up I noticed they had dropped the price in their ad. The manager reimbursed me the difference and I got it for $359. I've purchased a ton of Mosin's from Big 5 over the years and I've always been treated good and their selection is what you make of it. I always inspect whatever I'm considering buying.
My new K98 is a BNZ.42, matching barreled action and bolt with all markings and codes intact and not peened. Besides that, the major reasoning for me grabbing it was that the Bore was in Excellent condition and it had very sharp & shiny rifling. Then to sweeten the deal since its my Birthday this month, my uncle sent me a set of RCBS 8x57 reloading dies and a check for then entire amount of the K98 including the TAX and DROS.

There's a VERY nice one at the Big 5 in Madera right now. (Or at least, there was the other day.) Don't remember the code and date, but it was late 1930's. I was very tempted.NRA Life Member

I bought one
I bought a K98k at my local Big 5.
I looked at the one they had on display and it was not what I was looking for, so I asked the manager to see the ones in the back (they had two more). I ended up buying the last one he brought out.
The one I bought is a 1940 date, 243 code. It came with non-pinged markings on the receiver and barrel. A flat butt plate type, solid wood stock in very good condition considering it's age, no cracks or gouges.
Bore is in excellent shape with sharp lands and grooves and no corrosion or pitting.
After clean up I found all kinds of additional stamps on the wood stock and the metal parts.
I did have to buy replacements for the cleaning rod, lock screws and sling, the front sight mount is not grooved for a sight hood.

Just because there is no swastikas, doesn't mean its a russian capture. My buddy has an all matching, non-russian capture k98, but it was a pre-nazi era produced, so there is no swastika markings on the rifle.NRA Life Member

Thanks for the clarification.Originally posted by mauser98kthe 98k went into small scale production in 1934 and full scale production in 1935. the Nazi party took power in 1933, so they're not pre Nazi 98ks. there are pre Nazi German Mausers, like the G98, 98a, 98b, 98az, etc, but they're not the same thing.
up until late 1938, the primary stamp on the 98k was the Weimar eagle. then the eagle over swastika took over

Just for clarification, as discussed in this thread http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=388932, the bolt was force-matched by the Soviets with electropencil numbering. The only parts truly matching the receiver on a RC K98k are the barrel (usually) and the front sight blade. The bolt is usually scrubbed and not self-matching.Revolvers are not pistols
Calling a revolver a "pistol" is like calling a magazine a "clip", calling a shotgun a rifle, or a calling a man a woman.pistol nouna handgun whose chamber is integral with the barrel
