    CMP replacement vs. Boyd

After looking around and chatting with some of you I decided to go with a CMP replacement set for my Garand. I guess the fun will start when I have to switch everything over?

Are you getting it with or without stock metal?

It will be easy if you get it with metal. If you get it without metal and plan on transferring your current stock metal there are some tricks and tools that make it easier.

Calling a revolver a "pistol" is like calling a magazine a "clip", calling a shotgun a rifle, or a calling a man a woman.

They are a pretty good deal when you buy them with the metal as long as you don't mind the CMP cartouche on the side.

The three tricky areas are the front handguard liner, rear handguard clip, and stock ferrule.

For the front handguard liner, don't bend the little rounded tabs, they will weaken and break off. Bend the sides of the front of the liner carrying the tabs inward.

          See http://www.trfindley.com/pgmetrepf.html

The rear handguard is thin and easily cracked when you are trying to remove the rear handguard clip. The best way to remove it is with the tool designed for the job.

Notice that the clip is asymmetric with a high side and a low side

If you aren't going to use the tool, see http://civilianmarksmanship.com/stri...assembly4.html but be careful.

For the ferrule, use a long screwdriver prying against the ferrule itself to remove it.

If you dont have the rear handguard clip tool I have a much better way than CMP suggests
Cut two legnths of wire about 18 inches long.
Tie one end of each wire through the holes in the handguard clip.
Tie the other free end of one wire to something secure(nail in a work bench, handle on safe etc)
Wrap the other end of the other wire around a screwdriver etc for a handle.
Now simply pull ,the clip will open and you rotate the clip out.
Reverse process to install clip making sure you install it correctly as it goes on a certain way. Just look how the old clip comes off
              Good luck
