    CMP Enfield P17's

I was looking at the 1917 rifles, and I notice that there was a notice which reads, "** Not available through mail order. Counter purchases only at the Camp Perry & Anniston CMP stores when available**" http://www.thecmp.org/m1917.htm Does mean that they are not going to allow mail orders of these rifles at all or just for the time being?

Sometimes it means they do not have very many, or the conditon varies so much they want in person purchase only.

Most of the M1917s available came from Veterans organizations and the condition of the rifles varies considerably, with most having dark bores. They made them store purchase only in order to avoid disappointment by mail order buyers.

Call the CMP and talk to Orest, if you can...

I have a 1917 Enfield that CMP sent to me despite that statement on the website. Maybe he will send it, maybe he won't but it can't hurt to ask...

Then negotiate at a gun show. Also, you can try to make an announcement here. Like "WTB M1917 Enfield." or something like that. Put it in your signature...

CMP's M1917's are trickling in from veterans groups. Many of these have bad barrels due to corrosive blanks being used and no one cleaning them after each use. When I visited the South Store they had about 10 of them and all but one was in bad shape. I would not recommend purchasing one unless you can examine it in person. If you can convince CMP to send you one, I am sure that it would be as is, no returns. You would be better off watching the various forums for someone selling one.

Well I might just have to do that then; I don't want to be stuck with a lame duck. I won't sacrifice functionality for history.
