    C & R Eligible

I recently used my C & R to purchase a Colt Officers Model Match 38 Special revolver - it was of the 3rd model type which was manufactured by Colt from 1953 - 1969. The serial # placed manufacture in of mine in 1954. This was a face to face transaction out of state so I didn't have to go through an FFL Dealer.

The C & R book lists this model as being C & R eligible using this language:

Colt, Officers model Match (1953-1969), .22 and .38 cal. revolvers.

Does this mean that all the above - whether manufactured in 1954 or 1968 are C & R eligible or that only those manufactured from 1953 to 1957 are eligible?

It means what it says, models made from 1953 to 1969 are C&R eligible. Realize the C&R listing is a federal document. Since you transaction was f2f out of state, CA law was not involved. Now that you're in-state, fill out the registration form and submit it to the doj/bof.

You're set. You also have a sweet pistol

That's what I thought. The fellow at Kittery Trading Post in Maine where I bought it spent about 30 minutes looking up the serial number to determine year of manufacture and I'm certain had it come back 1960 or so he would have stated he could not sell it to me on the C& R because it was fewer than 50 years old. I was trying to remember some under 50 year old guns that are C & R eligible - Herret T/C Contender, the Ishapores - as examples. Glad I didn't have to fight that battle.

If you go to the BATF website you can print out a list of what's in the C&R book, plus the yearly updates.

that way you won't need to take your books with you when you go traveling and wonder if something you see is eligible or not.

Yep - should have had the list with me. I've got the list & updates at home and knew it was listed, but the seller was I'm sure going to assert that had the gun been manufactured after 1957 that it was not 50 years old & not eligible as a C & R. That's the only reason I can conceive of him looking up the serial number. They had their book out also & had the same info as me.
