I have done a lot of reading on them.

The Polish, Russians, and Yugos are said to be the best.
The Yugos are not like the others and were an updated version holding 9 rounds instead of 8 and having a longer grip. They also only take Yugo mags.
You can get them from J&G.

Polish are clones of the Russians and are the best deal for the money (my opinion after research. I want one).
They are said to have the best fit and finish and be pretty reliable.

The Russians are the true, classic TT pistols. But they are more expensive. Ideally I would want one of these, but price constraints have led me to the Polish.

I have read more problems with the Chinese and Romanian pistols than those above.
But many people have had them from any country without issues.
And the 7.62x25 is supposed to be a pretty hot round and fun to shoot. Plus you can't beat it for the money.
Probably a little too much penetration for HD.

If you don't find a great deal on a real, nice, Russian Tok buy a Yugo.

I've owned quite a few over the years.

Today I own a Polish and 2 Yugos.

      I like the Yugos best.

Oh, I have a CZ52 too -- but it's supposed to be sold.
People don't like to be meddled with. We tell them what to do, what to think, don't run, don't walk. We're in their homes and in their heads and we haven't the right. We're meddlesome.

I have a romanian that I picked up from turners last year, SUPER fun gun. Have not had any problems with it at all. The fit and finish are great, just need to fix the hole where the import safety went. Very happy with mine.
        The grips are from http://www.marschalgrips.com/

Waited 3 months for them but totally worth it. I say buy it!

I have a more recent Chinese Norinco 213 9mm that I plan on converting to 7.62Tok. These guns are pretty rough and tumble and any one you buy is going to be a fine little range toy. I say buy it cheap unless collectibility is a huge concern. You're not going to get stellar accuracy out of these, especially with surplus ammo.

From what I've seen the barrels are a mixed bag due to the old corrosive ammo. For ammo, a steady diet of Polish surplus should be fine as long as you don't mind the scary looking cracked brass. It's supposed to be corrosive, but if it is it's very mild as I've let my CZ-52 sit after running a few hundred rounds through it.The safety can also be very obnoxious. I've seen people cover it up nicely but it can a bit of work. My solution was a pair of wraparounds from Marschal. But that won't work on a standard Tok because they put the safety in a different place.

I highly recommend shooting your Tok at night if you get the chance, the fireball is incredible!

I bought a Chinese Type 54 from a fellow calgunner just a month ago. I fired off 100 rounds of Yugo ammo from it with very little issues. The only problem I encountered was the paint like sealant around the primer of the Yugo rounds. They crack and peel off during shooting and gets into the chamber to cause jams.

By the way, these are all corrosive ammo. How often do I need to clean the gun when shooting corrosive stuff?

Everytime, run water or windex through it after shooting, then dry it

Do a normal cleaning at home.

I have a Romy, Polish and a Yugo. They all shoot about the same. Got all three from SOG.
Other than the fact the Yugo holds another round in the mag it doesn't really matter what you get. They are all great shooters.

When I'm at the range I spray some Windex through and then run a bore snake through a couple times. A .30cal snake will do the trick.

i've got a polish tok - my only real gripes are the grip isn't fat enough and the trigger pull must be 25 lbs. which and effect accuracy. compared to my s&w 9mm and hungarian 9x18, a lot more recoil - but cheap and cheap ammo and reliable but kinda clunky

I own 4 now. Romanian, Polish, and 2 Yugos. Romanian is the first one I got. Finish is so-so but the gun shoots fantastically. I got the Polish second. It is nicer looking but trigger is not as good and the two of us don't shoot as well. Both Yugos are in EX shape and fit the hand very well. But one has a > 10 lb trigger so it is not fun to shoot. The other one has a nice trigger but I didn't shoot well with it the one time I took it out.

Overall, they are great guns. I really enjoy the Tokarev pistol and the ammo is cheap and a lot of fun to shoot (such a fast round). Aside from the Yugo being larger in the hand and holding an extra round, I don't see the advantage of one country over another. I think the Romanian has the worst finish, and it is probably the one in most used condition when I got it, but it shoots the best for me. The 2 Yugos have extremely different triggers. Get one, clean it up and hope it shoots well for you.

Have a Norinco type 213 back before Norinco was actually stamping their name on the slide. Made in Chinese arsenal #66 by the marks on the slide and receiver. Chambered in fascist 9mm luger.

Generally these differences between these pistols are in fit and finish. Polish models replicated the look of the prewar and wartime Soviet models, just with improved attention to detail. Think Polish M44 compared to Soviet M44.

The imports will likely all have some sort of fascist hack job retrofit safety on them, usually in a completely unworkable and incovenient location.

These pistols are built like T-34 tanks. With each shot they cause baby carriages to plunge down staircases in the middle of wild gunfights, the entire cast of the view to express their uncontrollable desire for Chuck Norris, and nazis and yoga instructors to lose bowel control in public.
