    C&R License question (East Bay Memebers)

    I was wondering, is it easier to get the C&R license than the handgun license?
    What do I need in order to get one? Also, where can I get one in East Bay ?

    By handgun license do you mean a handgun safety certificate?
    If so it is extremely easy to aquire one, all you need to do is go to your local dealer and ask to get set up with one. The test for it is a joke (really basic gun safety questions) and should only take you a few minutes. When I took mine last june I think it was around $30.

    As for a C&R license it is also very easy, all you need to do is go to the atf's website and request an application be sent to you. Just fill it out when you get it send a copy to the ATF and the second copy the chief law enforcement officer in your area. The ATF will be very quick to charge the $30 onto your card which will of course get your hopes up for a speedy return, but in all actuality it will be 1-3 month purgatry for you .

        Just to clarify SoCal Bob's reply, you don't have to send for the forms any more, ATF finally made a PDF version available. Just fill it out, print it and submit them.

          Correct & thank you. The ATF link is all you need, no more waiting for application forms in the mail. Also, the Certificate of Compliance form is not required for a single applicant, only if it is a group application with more than one RP - responsible party.

            Oh ok. Thank you guys.
            So besides the requirements to obtain a firearm, all I need is to learn how to operate a firearm safely through that study guid and the ATF form?

                The (DOJ) HSC is just if you want to buy a handgun from a CA FFL, they can't sell one to you without it unless you fall into one of the exceptions:

                Handgun Safety Certificate Exemptions (HSC)

                The following qualify for HSC exempt status:

                * Peace officer (active California)
                * Peace officer (active federal)
                * Peace officer (honorably retired California or federal)
                * Reserve peace officer (as defined in Penal Code Section 832.6)
                * Persons who have successfully completed P.O.S.T. 832 PC firearms training
                * Federally licensed firearm collector who has a DOJ-issued COE who is acquiring a federally-defined curio/relic
                * Person to whom a handgun is being returned, where he/she is the owner of the firearm
                * Carry Concealed Weapon (CCW) Permit Holder
                * Military - active duty
                * Military - honorably retired
                * Military - active reserve
                * Certain particular and limited authority peace officers
                * Persons who hold a DOJ-issued special weapons permit
                * Persons taking possession of firearms pursuant to specific conditions related to operation of law acquisitions
                * Law enforcement service weapon passed to surviving family member

                The (ATF) 03FFL is mostly good for purchasing C&R firearms from out of state.

                  If you are just trying to pass the handgun safety test to get your Handgun Safety Certificate then you don't need the ATF form at all. The ATF form is to get a Curio & Relic Federal Firearms License. Very basically, you only need the C&R FFL if you want to buy old guns from outside of California and have them shipped directly to your house. If you are just going to buy guns from your local gun shop then getting a C&R FFL is not required.

                    I am very concerned about your statement.
                    Could you clarify?
