    Question about a Mosin round

Could you guys tell me what type of round this is? Just looks a little funny with the tip painted and all. Is it anything special?

That is a round of what was known in the USSR as Project 732; and came about as a direct result of Stalin being attacked a the Moscow zoo by a Giraffe that was in fact a nazi spy, that was parachuted into the city by the Germans. Enraged by this attempt upon his life, Stalin ordered the creation of a a standardized ammunition that would simultaneously kill African mammals AND was effective as an anti-aircraft round.

The results were a terrifying secret of the Cold War

or...it might be an east bloc lacquered steel cased/steel cored 7.62x54r light ball round, the kind that indoor ranges have heart attacks about people firing there.

Cool, so nothing special then. I'm not familiar with steel core. Anything I need to know about it besides indoor ranges don't like it? And why is it they don't like it?

steel core = goes through backstops like butter at indoor ranges. hence why they don't like it. but to add, although not all steel core ammo has AP ability they do better than regular lead.

Duuuuuude, heat seeking AND it cooks the deer for you!!! What a time saver! How is this not already in my ammo box?!?!

I wonder if they come in a lead free version for the condor zone.

I think the most damaging aspect of firing a Mosin at an indoor range isn't that the bullet may go through the backstop, but that the concussion will give everyone in there a nosebleed...
