C & R "Worth It?"

Due to the CA restrictions, I know the "Is a C & R FFL worth it?" question comes up once in a while. I've had one for about 7 years but don't use it a whole lot, still my answer is a definite yes. I just did a cross country drive from my family home in New Hampshire back to CA. While back east, I visited the Kittery Trading Post in Maine and found a Colt Officers Model Match in 38 Special that is about 95%. Cost was $400.00. I would not have been able to buy it (legally) without the C & R, so for $30.00 per 3 years - I'd say it's still a great deal.

Retailers like Midway USA give discounts for C&R license holders. If you order a lot of stuff from the internet, it'll pay for itself many times over.

Yeah, besides the many reasons already, the mere fact that the C&R plus COE allows one to buy multiple handguns at the same time from dealers is worth it.

I'm going to be staying for a week around Portland, Maine - taking a trip with my girlfriend to visit her parents... Going to bring a couple of my C&R's on this trip, that's for sure! Is there an internet list of good places to go to, if I want to find rare firearms or overall just good deals? My gf says it's pretty much "Tackle, Liquor and guns" stores everywhere, but any real gems I should visit?

$30 for 3 years is $10 per year - hardly an "expense" More like a club membership... Since any freedom loving Federally Licensed Firearm dealer will scoff at you sympathetically when hearing "California", following it up with "C&R" will leave some options for them to sell you at at least the old stuff

And yeah, both Midway and Brownells will give good discounts on their wares - I've bought some mags at Brownells and bam - saved $6 per mag... Got my C&R fee back in one purchase

P.S. Having a C&R license is totally worth it. I've had a half dozen C&R rifles shipped directly to my home, which meant, I could shop around for the best prices and did not have to pay FFL01 transfer fees, CA sales tax, and DROS. In effect, I made by $30.00 back on the first purchase I made. UPS shipping times are also shorter than the compulsory CA 10 day wait.

Sent in my Signed Copy of FFL to both Brownells and Midway - e-mailed Midway 2 weeks later and they confirmed the receipt. When I logged into Midway's website - I had "Dealer's Homepage" button available, click and display dealer prices (which are pretty much their Sale prices, available all the time).

Brownells was different - created account and chose "C&R Collector" in a pull-down tab about myself. That alone gave me discounts.

If you buy just one gun using your C&R, then it has done more than paid for itself.

Then you can buy all the Mausers and Mosins that you want and not feel guilty.

My wallet is screaming like a little girl right now because of these C&R purchases....and add to the fact that Midway gives discounts to us C&R people. Then you see good looking 50-60 year olds...err rifles, what's not to love about the C&R, $30 for 3 years is cheap, what you get in return is priceless

I'm not too familiar with the Portland area, but I suggest taking 95 South to Kittery, ME and hitting the Kittery Trading Post. My best guess is that they have a few thousand guns on display. I was considering a Luger - they had about 30 of them for sale running from about $700.00 to a few thousand. The $700.00 ones were in very good overall shape. Quite a few C & R Smiths and Colts, a few Browning HPs and 1911s.

Rileys in Hooksett off Rte 28 is OK, but I didn't see alot of C & Rs.

I faxed mine to both Brownells and Midway, then sent follow up emails. The next day I received confirmation they received my signed / scanned - faxed C&R. And I was enjoying discounts from both of them, by mid-day.

I also found that SOG took my C&R faxed, so I was online and shopping with them immediately.

Also EmpireArms, took my C&R scanned and emailed, and I was online with them the same day I sent them the email (their fax# kept giving busy signals).

Nearly everyone else I faxed, or send email scans to, gave me zero response. A few of them, I've tried to find time to call from work, and then they tell me they only accept non-black ink signed - and send via snail mail... so I have a stack of signed in red C&Rs that have been gathering dust. Waiting for the day I sit down, and print envelopes, letters, etc... oh well, their loss.

Is it worth it??? YEAH... I can see what I want to buy, on the net, hit add to basket, and have it shipped to my door... (I only buy longarms)... I ALMOST think I'm back in the USA, and that I live in State where FREEDOM rules the day... then I try and buy a handgun, and I wake up and realize where I live.

well all you talk about is the "savings"

what about giving up your privcy at home?

a batf "agent" can come to your house at any time and demand to see the guns.and paper work.

but are the only guns he can look at are the ones in the book? or can he demand to see all the guns in the house?

An ATF agent can NOT come to your house anytime he wants to inspect your guns if you have a C&R. They must give you advance warning and you have the option of bringing your C&R guns to their office if you choose. I heard this doesn't even happen that often.

but do all your guns need to be listed in "the book" or just the cc&r guns?
it kinda bugs me that i give the gov all my info allready, we give a lot but need to keep some parts of ones life quiet.

i am looking at getting a license. but not all that puter savy i have trouble finding the answers i need, yes paint me parnoid with a wide brush.

love my country, but fear my goverment.
