That's the way it works. You move the front sight to the right and you have to move the barrel left to line it up.

The rear sight is moved in the direction that you want the bullet to go.

All rifles are that way, not just Mosins. You move the rear sight in the direction you want to move the POA. That means if you move the front sight instead, you must move it the opposite way.

Oh come on, we know it's just those sloppy tolerances that Ivan put in there... of course it's just the Mosins that need to be sighted like that.

If you think about, OP, it makes perfect sense.

Took me a while to realize it, but I thought it through, and it makes sense.

ok, I've always found this one a little hard to wrap my head around.

Say, for example, I sight on the bullseye at the center of the target. My shots are hitting to the left. I want them to hit more to the right. So I move the front sight in the opposite direction of where I want the shots to go - want them to go right so I move the sight to the left? So I'm basically chasing the hole, moving the sight towards where they are hitting? Hitting left, move sight left, in other words. I find the whole "opposite direction" bit a little confusing. Always have, anyway.

ooops I moved it too much

I tried to set my front sight by drifting it with a punch. I couldn't get it correct. So I got the tool shown in this article. Now when I miss I need to find another excuse!

Think of it this way. Imagine your rifle has a pivot point on the bottom of the stock and can swing right and left. Your shots are going left, and you want to bring them to the right. Move the front sight to the opposite side, in this case to the right. Think about how your rear sight will react. You just moved the sight to the right. To "catch up" to the front sight, you will have to pivot your barrel to the right to have the sights allign. This moves the entire gun in a clockwise motion and the shots as well. If you move the front sight toward the side the rounds are missing, you just keep chasing the misses, because you have to catch up with the new movement.

I think you mixed yourself up again... if you're shots are going left, you need to drift the front sight to the left.

The way I have always remembered it is to "Chase the shots" so if you're shooting left, drift the front sight left. It works.

I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.

Your last sentence is unclear to me and seems to be backward perhaps?
Basically, one has to remember that if the front sight is moved one way, the barrel has moved to the opposite direction relative to the front sight post. If shot are hitting left, move the front sight post left because the barrel is moved to right when the sights are lined up. Models or drawing it out are useful tools as well.

What tools are you planning to use to move that sight? I'de hate to see a repeat of the barrel bands incident.
