I've only bought service grade Garands from the CP[P]G. The shape was always "NRA Great" or better. They shoot from "nice" to "sweet". The bores were all "righteous" or "righteous plus". Hope this helps.

Get a service grade, Springfield if you hope to get a war-era one, HRA if you want to just go for the best finish. I've not seen a poor example of a service grade garand from these greek returns.

I have received two field grades that are just as nice as my service grades,
the only difference is that the stocks needed some TLC to get them in shape.
The metal was great. I may have just been lucky,so if you want to be sure to get a nice one, get a service grade.

For the most part Field Grade rifles are canidates for rebarrels. The difference in a Field and a Service Grade is clealy stated on the CMP Grade Discription. Barrel /bore wear will be higher on a Field Grade along with overall condition
Take it from someone who has personally handled many hundreds of CMP Garands, there is a huge difference between the two grades
Get the Service Grade you wont be dissapointed

I've recieved 4 SG's - 2 Springfield's and 2 HRA's. All are exceptional. This is the golden age of CMP M1 Garands right now. Get one and you will be so happy. No brainer.

I have bought about 8 service grade springfield and HRA. Not a bad one in the bunch. Almost as nice as the 4 Correct grades I got. They looked un-shot. All The greek returns(service or correct grades) have been great from what I have read.
