    Good deal on M1 Garand?

I have been offered to buy a Springfield M1 Garand for $795+ PPT fees at the gun shop. It's in 97% condition, but the stock color and hand guard do not match. Light wood with medium dark wood stock.

Owner didn't really have much info on the history of it. No rust and blueing is nice, no damage or cut receiver or import markings. Good deal? I wish I knew if it was or not, so I knew you'd be the guys to ask.

    Thanks

I have no idea what that gun shop means by 97% condition. But if it doesn't have matching wood, then by no means is it 3% less than perfect.

For a Garand to be 97%, it needs to be all correct parts, including correct stock, and original barrel. All correct cartouches must be visible and there is minimal wear with little to no finish loss.

After saying that, here's how I would judge a Garand.

    1. Check manufacture. If it's an IHC, then you probably want to buy it for $800.

    2. Check parts. If all the parts are correct including barrel and stock, it's definitely worth $800 no matter what manufacture. If it's mixed, then I would probably bargain it down. If it's WWII era with the correct lockbar sights, it's probably worth buying.

    3. Check barrel condition. Check throat erosion and muzzle wear. Is the bore pitted? Rifling look clean? No crown damage?

Sight unseen, I'd probably estimate it's value at $600-$650. That value would jump depending on parts correctness and/or barrel condition.

Sorry, yes, Parkerized. It's a Springfield Armory and the date in the stock says 1950 and it's not in english. It might not be the correct stock. What I meant by 97% was the condition as in no damage. I should have made that clear.

I'd pass. If he was asking $600, maybe. For $600 you could get a Service grade from CMP; and I bet the wood would match.

Thank you for your opinion. You right, CMP has better deals and probably matching parts. I couldn't find the number on the barrel to see if it matched the receiver. I am not a M1 Garand expert lol. I check everything and all I could get is a 1950 date on the barrel, if that's the date.

Well, considering the CMP isn't selling Garands at this time, $800 isn't an outrageous amount. Assuming the barrel is decent, $700 would be a fair price.

The problem with CMP Garands is they are sold out.

I figured I'd be paying a bit much since it's not a 100% original with the stock being two different wood colors, but you guys are right, CMP is out and what are the odds when they get more in of getting one. I heard they sell out quick to dealers who buy and sell them for profit.

Maybe I could get this one for a shooter and then if I've ever lucky enough to get a complete, numbers matching rifle, keep that for collecting. $795 seemed high to me, too.

795 is a solid deal on Garand as long as the barrel isn't shot out....

                      600 dollars for a garand that's 97%......is BS

Yes CMP is the cheapest way to get Garands but do they have them? Plus at least you know what this one looks like.....

The CMP keeps M1s in stock in the stores....north and south.....I just wished they had a west store. Mail order is stopped by micheals to keep the stores loaded. And there is a rumored shipment of M1s that must be arsenal checked....available next year.

Will any of the upcoming CMP Garands be service grade or better?
