Buying from the CMP

I'm 19 and I live in Orange County, and I really want to get a Garand when they come back in October. What clubs/events should I do to qualify, and how does the buying process work? Does the Garand just go to my door?

I own a remington 870 and have access to my dad's 10/22, GP-100, and Winchester 37 for competitions.

You should enter a shooting competition. It can be small bore, pistol, etc. You can get the locations and dates from Shooting Sports magazine. It is available from the NRA. You also have to be a member of a CMP affiliated club. The CRPA qualifies and I believe the dues are $18 per year. You can go on the CMP website (odcmp) for more specific information. Also, the CMP Western Games will be held at Camp Pendleton this October. They conduct a Garand clinic and a Garand match. If they have Garands in stock, they will bring them to the event. You can pick out the one you like. They will hold it while your paperwork is processed and then they will ship it to you. It will come FedEx to your front door.

The instructions on CMP's web page are very detailed and quite clear. Find an affiliate club that is local to you, join it, do a qualification match or safe handling demonstration, complete the paperwork and gather the needed documentation and you are good to go.

Search around here for more CMP info, and the CMP site also.
A hunting license also meets their requirements if you have one that needed a hunter safety course with live fire - CA meets this.

There is also an online club for $20 that gives info directly to CMP - it's on their website also.

You'll need proof of citiizineship (like a birth certificate) and have a form notarized.

Get everything in order NOW, it will come in a hurry and sell out faster than anyone thinks.

Another option is joining the Garand Collectors Association (http://www.thegca.org/) $25 yearly, due every September. They send a list to the CMP every Monday. I joined because my local club membership expired and it was holding up my carbine order. I really like their magazine.
However, I would recommend joining a local club that will show you how to operate the garand and make you shoot it in a practice match. I joined a club, just to meet the qualification (I wanted to collect a garand), but the practice match was so fun, I've been shooting matches ever since (renewed my membership twice).

I am glad this thread got started because I didn't think I was able to get an M1 from the CMP without a C&R license. I will have my hunters safety training done soon and I am glad to see that that helps me qualify to get an M1. I have been looking at buying other milsurp rifles, but I'll be saving up for a Garand now!
