K98 no-drill, normal eye relief scope setup?

I'm contemplating this setup for scoping a K98:

2. Attach an extension rail to it, like this: http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct...tnumber=314296

This way, the scope can be placed directly above the receiver with normal eye relief, as shown in the last photo here: http://home.comcast.net/~yzhu/accumo...an/dualk98.htm

Has anyone tried this setup (not necessarily with the parts shown here, those are just examples)? How well does it work?

The S&K mounts are over $100. I'm wondering if this could be accomplished for far less than $100, using the scout mount + scope rail extension.

The Accumount and S&K are the only ones that are viable as a scope mount.

The other one you cite is junk with extremely poor design. It uses screws as "strain" screws to keep the mount in place. Very poor design. Very cheap design. They're overpriced at $15.

I design and manufacture scope mounts for vintage military rifles. I don't make one for the K98k but I think I have a pretty good grasp on the subject.

The S&K scout mount for the K98 works great. I have one.

I fabricated a scout mount for a Swede M38, and bought a Darrel's scout mount for my Finn M39 Mosin.

The point is, all these mounts let you keep the scope low and are solid, simple designs.

Those other mounts that use extension bars look like they are cantilevered off into space way too far for their own good. As a mechanical engineer, I'd be concerned about how much load that applies to the original rear sight mount under recoil. Yes, they'll "work." And them something might just break.

With a standard issue stock, you can't get a proper cheekweld to the comb and still see through the scope unless the scope sits really low. Most of the "no gunsmithing" mounts that use a standard scope sit way too high. If nothing else, they have to so that a standard K98 bolt handle clears the scope.

As an NRA rifle instructor, I can't tell you how much grief I've seen people put themselves or their kids through by trying to get them to shoot a scoped rifle that didn't fit the shooter for squat. And the problem invariably is ... drumroll ... scope sitting way too high! Notice the comb heights of sporter rifles intended to be scoped vs those that aren't (like a Win '94) or military rifles with open sights...
