    M44 range report, shooting high...

I shot my M44 at Inland fish and game on Saturday and boy was it fun. I couldn't hit crap with it though first time through. It shoots really high. I could have been me, but can you adjust the front sight? I shoots really left with the bayonet closed, took out the wooden stake on the left of the target. I had to shoot at the bottom of the target to get on paper. I was lining up the front sight even with the rear sight. Oh using Bulgarian Heavy ball ammo too, every round fired and worked like it was supposed to. My shoulder is still sore and I have to lug my backback at school today, :-P I'll post a pic of the target when I get home.

Heavy ball is a real BLAST!!! talk about shockwave...

Heavy ball is definitely a blast, and I had the same exact problem with my M44 shooting high and to the left. If I extend the bayonet I'm dead on, but otherwise it's no where near where it needs to be! I'm glad you had fun. These little M44's are definitely worth the money!

    As I like to say:

    Mosin Nagant M44- $89

    100 Rds of 7.62x54r- $19

Pissing your friends off with the ridiculous muzzle blast- Priceless!

      M44

I have M38, and it shoots about 12 inches high at 100 yards on the lowest rear sight setting. I think they were zeroed at about 300 meters. Maybe you could put a drop of silver solder on your front sight to bring your POI closer to POA?

The sad thing is that if the byonet is out I still shoot high, but on center though. I was thinking of the mojo sight, but that does almost cost as much as the gun... hmm oh well I'll put some more rounds through her and see if it's me.

Slip a coffee stirrer over the post, trim to size. Works great.

Mosins all seem to shoot high at 100 yards...

The coffee stirrer would work, so would a small piece of shrink tubing (Radioshack has it.)

I went the Mojo rear sight route, partly for the adjustability, and partly because I like having a diopter instead of a tangent. Well, mostly that last one.

If you're in the Bay Area and want to try the Mojo, come to Chabot on July 7 for the Shoot-n-Q. I like it a lot, tons easier to line up = faster on target.

Arent these zeroed for 200+ meters, so it not unusual to shoot high, extend the bayonet, everyone will love you. I once took that to the 25 yard range which is dominated by earplug whearing 10/22 shooters, needless to say it cleared the range, as earplugs wont help much when ur right next to this things shock wave.

I just went shooting with my M44 and Hungarian heavy ball and I was hitting a dead tree at about 200-225 with iron sights and it was no wider than a man. Fun stuff.

I would love to get a mojo sight though!

haha well luckily for everyone I was pretty far apart and a gentleman was shooting his sweedish 6.5, still pretty loud as well. My earplugs worked fine :-P but then again I was at the epicenter of the shockwave. I'll try shooting further out with a larger target :-P next time and maybe get the mojo rear sight.

It should be zeroed for 100, since there's a seperate 200 meter setting.

The most distracting thing about shooting next to a Mosin carbine is the fireball. Shooting next to an M1A with the right (wrong?) muzzle brake can be a really interesting experience in decibels.

When I first got my M44 I took the bayonet off because it fit in the case better without it. However, no matter the distance or rear sight setting, I had to aim at around 7:00 or 8:00 of the target to hit center. Imagine a square piece of paper and aiming at the very edge of the lower left corner in order to hit center. I put the bayonet back on, and now it shoots damn near dead-on so long as I adjust the rear sight for distance. Go figure.

actually, there's a great reason for this, i am not sure how many of you know this. The rifle's barrel harmonics were designed to shoot with the bayonet out for trench warfare. In case you had to immediately turn your gun into a spear. More efficient to have it out and ready to go than having to slap on or extend the bayonet mid-battle.

Also, funny thing.. when I was a kid, my parents got me a book (back in the ussr) in 1987, titled 'rifles and submachine guns'. I found it recently, and I looked up the mosin nagant rifle in it. And in russian, it states that the rifle was sighted with bayonet attached/extended (this was noted for both 91/30 and m44). If anyone wants, I can scan that segment (it's in russian though)
