I just watched the trailer for the remake of True Grit.
In it, there was a revolver that looks a little different:
The Colt Dragoon.
I was just wondering what the part in front of the
cylinder on the barrel was.

Well there's the wedge that holds the barrel on, just in front of the cylinder. Then under the barrel is the rammer assembly that seats the balls in the cylinder. And don't forget the front sight....Anything I missed?

You mean the color case-hardened rod? That's the ramrod.

The flathead screw is the pivot point for the handle, and the rammer itself is driven through a hole in the frame into the cylinder to drive the ball home.

(This is a cap and ball weapon, if you didn't know that)

In line with the rammer on the other side, there's a scallop where you put the ball into the bottom chamber of the revolver. Then you pull the catch on the ramrod handle at the right below the muzzle, and pivot that down. Drives the ball in, packs it down against the powder and wad. Repeat that 6 times, and put a percussion cap on each nipple in turn.
