98K stock question

I just brought home my first 98K, and I am pretty happy with it. But, one question burns in my mind. What the hell is that little metal circle piece for near the end of the stock? In an image, it was listed as tube for plate? Plate for what? Tube? Plate?

That's the bolt take-down disk. It's a little tool built into the stock to make it easier to take apart the bolt. It gives you something to push the bolt against while you are trying to relieve the striker spring tension.

Hahaha, I also Just my 98 and was wondering the same thing, I was about to post the same question.
I'm actually in the middle of Removing the Cosmo and Shallac, no sanding of course

That is the thing that prevents you from punching a hole in your coffee table. Don't ask how I know that...

the metal disk on both sides of the stock with a hole through it is the bolt takedown disk as the others have said. looks like this:


sometimes you'll find a Unit Disk on some rifles. looks somethin' like this:


the markings differ from country to country and such, but they generally give you information about what unit that rifle was issued to, the condition of the rifle when it last had an armory inspection, or other stuff like that.

Thanks for the help. I would have never guessed that just by looking at it. I was trying to figure out what kind of weird sling attachment or cheek-rest may have gone there.
