    Ammo Cans

This maybe slightly off topic but yet related to C&R. 20 years ago we bought a second house in eastern San Diego County desert as a winter weekend getaway. One of the previous owners had been quite a desert rat and had a collection of just about anything that looked like junk, and some of it was stored in old ammo cans. I recently bought a CMP Garand and some surplus ammo and though it would be interesting to use one of the cans for period realism. The smaller 30 cal cans are distinctly different design than the modern 5.56 and 7.62 cans. The old cans have the Ordnance bomb embossed on the back.

My questions to the group are:
What is the age of the cans? Are they WWII or Korean vintage?
What are the dates of the repacks?
Is there any value to cans of this age?
I washed them off with soap and water, and as you can see they are rusty in places. How much can I clean them up without destroying the collector value, if any?
Are there any good websites for collectors of this stuff?

The backs of the cans say CANCO, CROWN, CROWN, and EMCO on the bog one.
The three smaller cans have a two wire latch design. The big one looks like a more modern .50 cal can. The bottoms of the small ones are embossed to show which way the bullets should face.

How do I load the files directly into the message rather than attach them? More pictures coming in a follow up message.

    More pictures of ammo cans.

Ok, so the last one is off topic. It is my reloading/workbench in the new garage we built this summer. Beats the old set up.

Check out this web site http://browningmgs.com/AmmoCans/T-Chial/AmmoBoxes.htm
      Revolvers are not pistols

pistol nouna handgun whose chamber is integral with the barrel
Calling a revolver a "pistol" is like calling a magazine a "clip", calling a shotgun a rifle, or a calling a man a woman.

Thanks Milsurp. I should have know you would already have it scoped out. I wish my cans were in as good a shape as those in the pictures. But for having been in a leaky shed in 120 heat for at least 50 years, they are in decent shape.

People collect all kinds of militaria. Some people collect Garand en bloc clips http://members.bellatlantic.net/~wol...ips/clips.html

I think part of the charm of those ammo cans is their "been there" look, so I wouldn't clean them up too much. Just try to kill any rust.
