For Cosmoline, I use Mineral Spirits on the hard parts. For furniture, sweating it out is best. There are MANY methods of doing it. Sticky bolt, http://www.surplusrifle.com/shooting...esbs/index.asp

Your going to love it. !

my first rifle was a surplus 98 mauser. it wouldnt fire in cold weather at all! I took the bolt out and cleaned it several times thinking I had gotten all the grease out each time. finaly my dad helped me out. we dropped the whole barreled action into a barrel of boiling water. after boiling for about an hour we skimmed of the grease from on top of the water. I seem to rember getting another cup full off of it. Ive never found a better preserved milsurp. DR

Hoppes solvent and denatured alcohol for the metal parts. Hot water for the stock.
The bullets with my name on it I'm not worried about, it's the "To whom it may concern" ones I'm worried about.

mineral spirits, gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosene will all dissolve cosmoline and work great for removing it off metal parts completely without much work but soaking and a tooth brush for the hard to get places.

boiling water will work for smaller parts like the bolt etc because cosmo melts at around 120-130F but this is kind of messy as the water does not dissolve it it just liquefies the cosmo so it can come out and float to the top.

for the stock making the wood sweat out cosmo is the best method and this can be done a number of ways. you can put in into an oven on low (be careful not to burn the wood!!) you can put it on the dashboard of a car on a hot day (but it stinks up the car for weeks) you can put it in a black trash bag and hang it outside in the sun on a hot day.

don't use solvents on the wood unless you intend to strip off the shellac and refinish the wood.

mild solvents like hoppes and CLP can remove cosmoline off metal parts but its about 100x more work than mineral spirits and 1 gallon of MS cost less than either of them so i highly recommend mineral spirits for the metal parts it works wonders for removing cosmoline. the stuff literally dissolves cosmo on contact as evidenced by the clear MS turning brown from the cosmline when it touches it and it works very quickly.

boiling hot water and dishwashing soap. the hot water will melt the wax, the detergent will keep it off the metal. Since the water is boiling hot, when you take the metal parts off, just dry with a cloth. follow up with some rubbing alcohol and then your favorite oil. For the sks/ak I just use transmission oil. All items can be bought at the 99c store. The boiling hot water comes from your faucet. I just get a small cup and pour the hot soapy water through the barrel and scrub with a brush.

Dont do this on your stock (wood parts) as it will take off some of the finish.

For the stock I just wiped the stock with some warm water with murphy's soap oil. A little cosmo in the stock doesnt hurt anybody. Eventually it will come off.

Gas is what I have used and it worked great. Just be sure to clean it off real well and do a thorough job of cleaning and oiling before shooting.

I take a piece of PVC plastic pipe of large enough diameter to fit the rifle action in. Glue a cap to one end, with a slip-on cap for other end. Put rifle action in tube and fill with diesel fuel. Let stand a couple of days, wipe dry.

If you filter the diesel to remove particles you can put it in your fuel tank, if you run diesel of course.

well my mosin came today, got most of the cleaning done using mineral spirits with rubbing alcohol to wear that down.had some black paint on the tip area of the barrel that was worn in to patchs ,it cleaned right off.bolt has a little rust tang to bits and pieces, cleaned up good-have it sitting over night in a pot covered in breakfree clp for good measure-.
barrel was good grooves with minor pitting and no counter bore, chamber was excellent condition.
wood was fair with some splintering on the tip area, have not decided what to clean it with yet, shellac is worn in some spots, the sling metal is in good shape.
tomorrow i will clean her off and lube using m-pro7 oil

I've been using carburaetor "chem dip" with really good results for the metal parts. Then, I built a "trash can oven" to sweat the cosmo out of the stock. Works pretty good...
