    C&R question

Is a C&R long gun 50 years old, or over 50 years old? I have a 1960 Remington 870 in the FS forum and have had a number of inquiries about if it is a C&R. I don't need any trouble, but if it's a C&R it would be a big selling point.

    Thanks, John

The actual wording of the law is a firearm "manufactured at least 50 years prior to the current date". Since most firearms can't be dated to a particular day or month, most people wait until January 1 of the following year just to be safe.

as far as i know needs to be 50 years old and needs to be on the C&R list.

I only saw Remington 150th Anniversary model 870SA slide action shotgun, caliber 12 gauge on the list.

That is my belief and may be incorrect.

The shotgun does not need to be on the C&R list. It just needs to be C&R and at least 50 years old. Firearms that are at least 50 years old become C&R automatically and don't need to be added to the C&R list.

Now, after reading the catagories I see that it becomes C&R after 50 years, or if they put it on the list prior to it being 50 years old for one of the other two reasons..... I stand educated, thank you.

You added that as I was typing my response...

So to the original question I would wait until day 1 of the next year, so 1960 + 50 = 2010 so eligible jan 1 2011.

If I recall correctly, Remington 870 shotguns might be one of the firearms that you can actually tell the year and month of manufacture. If the barrel code says it was made before October of 1960 then you should be good to go.

I wouldn't suggest going by the barrel code since barrels are so easily swapped on them. YOu might want to call remington and see if they can narrow the born-on date to a specific month. Otherwise, just wait until the first of the year.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

I did call the Remington 800 number yesterday before listing it and all the guy said was that is was a 1960 production gun. The current barrel has no date code that I can detect but the gun did come with 2 barrels originally and one that I sold here on the list was dated "WG", or August of 1960. That barrel was probably the original one to the gun.

                    Thanks Guys!
