    yugo SKS 56/66 possible conversion???

    k,
now i have an M59/66 that i don't particularly like. i don't like the nade launcher or the sight. its just extra useless weight. i was thinking and i am not 100% sure, but does any one know if its possible to put a standard yugo M59 barrel on the M59/66 receiver and have every thing work?

why not just remove the sight and if you don't like your muzzle brake or a barrel end with bare threads when you take the brake off have it cut down and re-crowned.

you better not have a 59/66 with an in-tact working grenade launcher spigot, if you do you better remove it or disable it or else you a breaking the law by possessing a destructive device.

no, it has a sleeve welded over it and the spot weld also attaches the sleeve, GL and barrel together. im thinking it would be easier to take the barrel off and replace it. i like the straight M59 style a lot better

It would probably be easier and cheaper to sell your M59/66 and then buy an M59 or Albanian SKS. Unless you know of a cheap source for SKS barrels.

looking at prices. SKS are getting expensive. Might be able to get a good price and buy a Romanian or another yugo with out the GL.

my 59/66 had a muzzle brake tack welded on by Century arms. i got it off in less than an hour with a die grinder and channel locks, yours sounds worse than mine was however.

doing this does not remove the bayonet catch etc. as that is part of the front sight assembly.

either way your looking at a decent amount of work, what your thinking of doing is possible but you will also need the gas tube from the doner rifle as they are not the same as the tubes on the 59/66's. its probably more likely you will find a chinese or russian barrel as well because the M59's are no where near as numerous as these ones and if your bore is real good on the 59/66 your probably better off modifying it either by cutting it down or removing the extras. cutting it down would provide you mostly with what your looking to have but at the end of the day its still never going to be a true M59

yeah its a bit of a pain in the arse, my was an inter ordnance. they made damn sure that sleeve was on there or good. i might shop around and have to coble some thing together. so new gas tube and new barrel. probably russian or romanian. ill have smith put it together that way i will not end up on the 3rd or 4th page of the new papers with: young man rebuilds rifle and it goes KAPOW!

you could also do a paratrooper conversion, prince 50 sells a front sight for this purpose and has done this to many 59/66's

if you want to look into that i recommend you check out his thread on the SKS boards

here is a photo of the finished result on a 59/66 he did
