    Cylinder filler for black powder

Corn meal, grits, cream of wheat?

Is what you use a regional thing or does one actualy work better than the other, I do know that instant grits are favored down south as in some opinions that's all they're good for.

None of the above. Florist foam works best. The cream of wheat method is heavily flawed. The shooting of the gun can knock it loose or out completely which will cause either a chamber fire or you will simply lose you're powder. Also if its a hot day you are going to dry out the packing which will cause it all to fall out. The Foam is soft and packs easily but is also not an obnoxious white color that is easy to see.

He is looking for a packing to load blank loads into a black powder cap and ball pistol. You need something to pack in there that wont act as a projectile to replace the lead ball.

          Nope, not even close guys

On the Ruger Old Army the loading ram only rams so far, so when you are loading lite powder loads you can short seat the ball and not compress the powder charge, this is a bad thing.

Some gunners pour the powder charge then top it of with corn meal, grits or Cream of Wheat to take up the extra space then set the ball. This avoids the dreaded and sometimes fatal KABLOOIE!!! effect. I'm thinking felt wads and a hole punch ought to do the trick too.

Oh! Well then what you want is wadding!

If you want to make loading faster, and take up that extra space then what you want is paper! (Though the florist foam will do the same thing still for you.)

They are really easy to make and you will have pre-measured loads for each shot every time. with the powder and ball all wrapped into one nice quick package ready to load.

            Vid demonstration.

Try pillow filler (stuffing), bought at craft stores.

I don't think so, the powder charge doesn't work well when it's greased up.

Some like to use Crisco over the top of the bullet, but I prefer it on the cookie sheet when I bake biscuts.

I have always used a lubed felt wad in my 1858 Remington. something like this: http://www.buffaloarms.com/browse.cfm/4,5525.html
Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.
