    So I got a Mosin Nagant...now what?

I few months back I purchased a 91/30 from Aim and it looks really nice. I have not had a lot of time to mess with it and I am not very familiar with the steps required to get this ready to shoot. What is a good method for removing the cosmoline and what steps do I need to take to make sure it is safe to fire? I sure would like to take some of the stink out of it, makes my safe smell and you gotta wash your hands after handling it

Its a 1929 hex receiver btw. Pretty neat.

    Revolvers are not pistols

pistol nouna handgun whose chamber is integral with the barrel
Calling a revolver a "pistol" is like calling a magazine a "clip", calling a shotgun a rifle, or a calling a man a woman.

The method I use is one of those handheld steamers. It shoots a sharp jet or wide patern of steam and wipe away. Separate the stock and go to town on the bbl and reciever. Afterwards remember to do a good clean and oil. I have never had a problem getting all the cosmo out that way and have'nt harmed any of my Mosins with this method. Also be careful the metal WILL get hot.

The steamer method works. I have used it on many of my rifles BUT.......my friend bought his first 91/30. He brought it over to my house to use my steamer and the steam caused a sticky white film to form on his stock. Nothing we did would remove this weird film. Tried using just heat lights to sweat out the cosmo and still the white sticky film stayed. Still dont know what that was. Its never happened since to any other rifles.

I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.

Yes give it a good cleaning, but don't worry if you never get it 'clean.' That's just how Mosins are...
