91/30 sniper accuracy?

what did a 91/30 sniper rifle have to be capable of before it was selected as a sniper?

1 MOA, 2, more?

also, how are your orgininal snipers shooting MOA wise?

The rifle were selected for accuracy after production. They were also made in lots of snipers and tested those that didn't pass sniper requirements were left as a regular rifle. This is why its possible to have a CH marked Tula with no holes drilled in the receiver. Accuracy requirements for a regular Mosin is 5.9 inches at 100 meters for a sniper rifle 3.1 inches at 100 meters.

With BG milsurp ammo, most of my mosins shoot 3-5" groups at 100yards.

My snipers with pristine bores will shoot 1-2" groups, using crap surplus ammo too. I imagine with exploding rounds like russians used, it could get nicer.

guess i got a good one

no sniper or ex sniper, rough 1942 izzy. Had Frank in redwood city counterbore the barrel for about 3/4 inch, finn trigger, cheapo scout scope, bore a wee bit dark but sharp, random hungarian surplus light ball, 100 yards off sandbags.

strings a bit vertically, but that might be inconsistant powder loads..

didn't have enough ammo with me to zero it, just went for a group.

i've been thinking of having frank counterbore my 43 91/30 izzy

when i took it out to the range i worked out where to aim based on where it was firing and ended up with this with ironsights at 50 yards using MFS 174 gr FMJ from big 5



not to shabby, my bore is dark and has light pitting and my muzzle while passes the bullet tip in the muzzle test does show signs of uneven wear from previous cleaning that was no doubt done to it in its life

Yup, that's the results i had before i started working on it, it was still halfway accurate, but that counterbore combined with the finn trigger & the free floated barrel did clean things up quite a bit

Will try this electronic bore cleaning thing tomorrow. Am not expecting wonders, but i guess it can't be bad to get some 70 year old crud out that bore...

I would guesstimate that my 91/30 shoots roughly 4" at 100 yards with the hot surplus rounds. At 400 yards, the bullet was hitting within a basketball sized area of dirt. Without a doubt the most accurate rifle you can get for 100 bucks and 25 cents a round.

So the sniper rifles are neat wall hangers...as compared to my unscoped 1903 1921 built rock island rifle and rebarreled in 1942. Buy the rifles anyway. Scopes make a weak eye like mine good. Black barrels turn bright with firing. Don't Hobbes the copper out of the pits. Filling in the pits is like making your wife happy.
