    CMP marksmanship requirement

    Hi all,

I need to get a marksmanship certification to order a carbine. Richmond R&G club said that I have to join a match to get that qualification. Any truth in that? Why can't I just demonstrate safety handling & shoot some rounds down range?

I know that I can just use C&R FFL license, but haven't applied yet? I have expired CCW permit from Georgia & Florida. Anyone know if I can use that?

Talk to RSO down the firing lanes, give him the marksmanship form and clipboard to make it easier for him.

You can also just join an affiliated club. The Garand Collectors Association is a good choice here's the site. http://www.thegca.org/

Also, the CPRA is affiliated. http://www.crpa.org/

It makes sense, given their name "Civilian Marksmanship Program" and their charter, that they have a marksmanship requirement. I copied this mission statement from the home page "The CMP was created by the U.S. Congress. The original purpose was to provide civilians an opportunity to learn and practice marksmanship skills so they would be skilled marksmen if later called on to serve the U.S. military. Over the years the emphasis of the program shifted to focus on youth development through marksmanship." If they were just in the business of unloading USGI surplus I guess gun brokers would snatch up the good stuff and resell at higher prices to the average joe. You don't have to score high enough to obtain a qualification ranking - just complete a course of fire match.

If you have a friend that is a cop then he or she can fill out the form for you as well.

no, different requirement. There are both marksmanship and club affiliation requirements.

If Richmond is hesitant, try Chabot. Call first, and probably better to do it on a non-weekend day.

If the CCW required any shooting to get it, I'm pretty sure they will accept it for the marksmanship requirement.

I stand corrected. Damn that's twice today. Bed time is next.

Actually, his CCW would exempt him from the marksmanship requirement. Unfortunately, I bet they want it to be currently active. You might try contacting them to find out.

Marksmanship or other Firearms Related Activity
You must provide proof of participation in a marksmanship related activity or otherwise show familiarity with the safe handling of firearms and range procedures. Your marksmanship related activity does not have to be with highpower rifles; it can be with smallbore rifles, pistols, air guns or shotguns. Proof of marksmanship participation can be provided by documenting any of the following:

                -Current or past military service.
-Current or past law enforcement service
-Participation in a rifle, pistol, air gun or shotgun competition (provide copy of results bulletin).
-Completion of a marksmanship clinic that included live fire training (provide a -copy of the certificate of completion or a statement from the instructor).
                -Distinguished, Instructor, or Coach status.
                -Concealed Carry License.
-Firearms Owner Identification Cards that included live fire training.
                -FFL or C&R license.
-Completion of a Hunter Safety Course that included live fire training.
-Certification from range or club official or law enforcement officer witnessing -shooting activity. A form for use in completing and certifying your range firing can be downloaded from the CMP web site at -http://www.odcmp.com/forms/marksmanship.pdf
-No proof of marksmanship required if over age 60. proof of club membership and citizenship required for all ages.
NOTE: Proof of marksmanship activity is not required for purchase of ammunition, parts, publications or memorabilia.

I'm positive they will accept it even if it is not current. I had an old USPSA classification card that they accepted.

A hunting license also works. If you had a hunter safetys course that requires shooting. CA does.
